Coming soon will be a new generation Avensis built upon a completly new platform. With new engines, a four wheel drive system a very hot T-Sport version.

The production start date is January 6th 2003 with the new car hitting the dealers across europe around march time.

the car looks very radical compared to the current model (169w).

when i get chance i will take some "spy shots" of it from inside the assembly shop this weekend.

Sounds interesting.

I'm in the middle of looking for a change to my car, and the one thing that is putting me off buying a New Avensis this year is how much the Relaunched car will be different to this years. I'm that concerned about the effect it may have on my cars resale value etc, that I'm considering defecting to another maufacturer too.

I will always remain loyal to Toyota though, it's been a great car and with hubby having one, I'll never be free ;)

Lets just hope the styling looks good, and nothing at all like the hideous new Corolla (I know its a matter of taste, before everyone starts)...

okay, well todays "raid" on Assembly shop didn't go as well as I thought it would. too many contracter working over the weekend so the Assembly pilot lads have hidden all the new cars away. but i have seen and have some photos of the new alloy wheels.

4 different types

2 * 16" wheels one 8 spoke and one 10 spoke

and 2 * 17" wheels one 6 spoke and i'm unsure about the other couldn't quite see all of the rim but possibly 8 or 10 spoke.

it also looks like different types of tyres are being tested.

205/55 * 16 Michelin Pilot - unsure what type but they were directional and had 10 spoke alloys similar to the Corolla T-Sport.

215/45 * 17 Dunlop SP Sport 3000a again unsure what type but these also were directional these were on what looked to be the T-Sport Rims couldn't properly see what these rims looked like.

215/45 * ZR17 Bridgestone Turanza - possibly trial tyres as the Bridgestone website doesn't show this size tyre in the Turanza range with the tread pattern I saw this morning.

oh yes. Auto gearboxes. 4sp auto and 5sp auto boxes will be available.

i guess the 4sp will be mated to the 1.8 and diesel and the 5sp will go with the 2.0 petrol and possibly the 2.4 if that's not just a T-Sport only engine

Does it look like the new Caldina on the attached picture? I figure that the Avensis is called Caldina on some markets (Australia) or am I wrong?

Unfortunately this generation Avensis/Caldina have different bodyshells the one in the picture is based on the same modified Celica Underbody as the Avensis but looks completly different.

the model codes are

312n-Sedan

313n-Liftback

314n-Wagon

315n-Wagon (Caldina) 4x4 2.0 16v (old Celica GT-4 turbo engine)

this is the first time that the Caldina has had a different styling to the european version Carina/Carina II/Carina E/Avensis.

the rear window of 315 is triangular like the new Corolla but the rear window on the 223w is the same shape as the model it is replacing.

the model which the new Avensis is based on is the Allion/Premio this time. the front end of the Premio, with slightly different rear quarters, and the interior of the Allion.

I have seen some photos floating round at work today if I can "Borrow" them tomorrow then I'll try and post them in the evening or some time saturday.

Hello and thanks for the post devilock some nice info, Out of interest what sort of power (bhp) does the 2AZ-FSE(?) 2.4 VVT-i D4 put out. Reason I ask is that I believe that there is a possibility that the next update for the RAV4 (2004 model year) might get the same engine.

Unsure sure about the power but it will possibly be somewhere in the region of 220 or 240 BHP as I believe this will be the engine going into the T-Sport version.

Also got a bit more info today some of the Auto gearboxes will have semi-automatic Tiptronic style shift paddles on the steering wheel. Same as Porsche and Mitsubishi use.

The full DVD Sat-Nav raises up out of the center of the Dashboard. and has this funky little remote control on the center console by the handbrake.

the turn by turn Sat-Nav has a permanet Pod at the top of the dashboard with a little wheel in the center of a row of buttons - i think this is for helping to select different modes on the display as some of the buttons have different titles on them can't quite remeber of the top of my head.

The interior is like 2 notches up from the current Avensis in terms of comfort and quality. the digital Heater controls are standard on all of the models I have seen so far.

As Always When I get chance for some pictures and more info I will post it here.

Finaly I found some spy shots of the new Toyota Avensis. The other guy is tooooo slow. If this is how the Toyota Avensis is going to look like, then I wan't call it radical. I don't like the design on the this car it's toooo conservative. It looks like the old VW Passat or something like that. I like the Allion and the Premios design.:)
