Engine Sounds/40,000 Mile Service

Hello I'm new to this forum but I wish I had visited it before I took my 2001 1.3 SR in to a toyota dealership for its 40,000 mile service! It cost a fortune and the two things I asked them to look at, they didn't find anything - did they bother to look at all?

There was a noise in the engine - they didn't find anything but as soon as I got in the car and turned the key in the ignition I could hear it so got a mechanic over - he had a listen and diagnosed it as the alternator bearings - so I went to an auto electrics place and got that fixed. BUT - turns out there were two noises, not one - the water pump needs to be fixed too! So they missed both...

I don't know enough about cars to know exactly what this means but the (independent) garage who will do the work on this for me has said that they will need to top up the antifreeze when they've replaced the pump - the 40,000 mile service included a full coolant change, is this related??? Should they have seen the fault? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

The other problem is a persisently squeaky front offside brake - they said they couldn't see anything wrong but again, did they actually look?

Any advice? (and apologies for such a long post)

1st off hi and welcome!

2ndly there has been alot of brake squeaking going on lately, I dunno if its related to the weather but I reckon its a possibility.

I reckon someone who knows what they're talking about will come along soon! :D

Hiya!

I had a Yaris T3 previously, and it developed a squeak from the same wheel - took her to Toyota and they said the front o/s brake pad was binding and causing the squeak - they cleaned it, readjusted it and it was fine..never had a prob with the squeak after.

hi there. i work for a Lexus dealer, and know what your going on about.

The squeling noise your going on about was probably the water pump in the first place. I replaced it on my old Yaris. The garage should of at least heard the noise. Or sometimes they can mistake it for the belt. that squels when water gets on it.

When changing the pump, they will have to drain the coolant anyway, but tell the garage that its just been changed and tell them to use it again.

the noise from the brakes is usually a build up of brake dust from the pads. Again should be noticed on the service. If its not a seizing caliper.

if its just dust, find a nice empty road, drive about 70mph and brake heavily. That usualy gets rid of the noise.

Hope this has helped you.

Hello - yes, it has helped - thanks!

I seem to have had a few problems recently but still love my little sr. I drove a corsa courtesy car recently and it was like a small tank in comparison.

It was RMB Toyota in Darlington and I'm going to call them back and express my dissatisfaction - don't know if it will get me anywhere but I know a bit more now about what to say to them so thanks again, guys.

No, they didn't look! Simple as that! Iv had my SR in twice for squeeky brakes, first time... we can't see anything... brakes squeeking, went back and said i want it fixed. By magic they discovered the brakes were binding and needed cleaning and greasing. Not squeaked since.

I may try again then now I know a bit about what to say to them, if I can get them to do it for free cos they didn't sort it the first time....?? Probly a bit optimistic.
