yep typical customer service

did you know once oil has got below half way on the dipstick the oil in the sump is not enough to cool the block and thus more heat and wear esp if towing and fast hard revs (which small engines need esp with auto box ) i would advice to all part ex and buy honda hurt toyota in sales then build quality will increase

since toyota went mass market they went down hill toyotas from japan seem better

Well I bought a Dec 2002 Vermont 1.8VVTi with 14732 miles on the clock, looks genuine. It's now done 5000 more and I was horrified when I looked at the dipstick and only the very tip of it was in the oil! It took 2 litres to get it to safety.

This is really bad, I don't hammer it, very rarely over 75-80mph mostly to work and back, 15 miles with very little in town driving too.

So in light of earlier posts late 2002 low milage 1.8 VVTi's can have this fault.

I didn't buy it from a Toyota Dealer and haven't had a service yet so don't have a relationship with a Toyota Dealership. I wondered how people have managed with their dealers on this problem and any hints on the way to have them deal with it.

I to have oil problem, used a whole 5ltr of oil past 5 weeks, 02 18vvti.......Spoke to Inchcape in oxford as its just outside warrenty they dont hold out much hope, has a good fsh not all with Toyota though.....Upshot is traded it in collecting new Toyota Yaris diesel on monday.........

All in all a black mark for Toyota on this problem, there seems to be no solution in place to make it an easy fix for the customer, making the garage strip down the engine to get the bore size to confirm the obvious is crazy....and only delays the repair, i cant go without a car for 2.5 weeks,

Thats my rant feel better now.......

Just a note on your warranty. Engine is covered for 5 years ( by Toyota due to this issue ), although they do not make this public.

Therefore, your oil consumption issue should have been sorted under warranty.

i have a 2002 corolla 1.6 which seems to be burning a lot of engine oil an have been told that its within the toyota limits. ive only done 30k in it from new . my warranty has just recently expired and have put a post on here about weather i should extend it. i think i will just in case there is a problem as toyota would not admit to it and the advice i have been given by other members i think it makes a safe bet. i also have a yaris which does not burn a drop of oil so it just makes you wonder whats happening to the very high standards toyota had. im waiting to see how much oil it burns in between next service and then i think ill start pushing for answers

:arrgg-matey: Well, why didn't I look here sooner! I have today picked up my 2001 Avensis CDX 1.8 VVTi with its third engine, the result of what is obviously well known to all in this forum!

I bought the car (cheap) at 110K miles with FTSH up to date. It had had: a new engine (under warranty) at 50k, a new gearbox at 60k and a new steering rack at 100k. What could go wrong I thought?

As it was serviced at 110k, I hadn't even checked the oil and having just gone past 120k decided to change the oil and filter. I dropped the sump drain and was a little worried by how little oil came out, however I hadn't had an oil light so assumed it was ok. Changed the oil, changed the filter and topped up with 4l or so.

All was well for about a week, when on my way to work, I noticed a light tappetty ticking develop, a couple of miles further and crunch, rattle bang - a tale all too familiar to those in this forum!

The nice AA man took me to my main dealer, one listen and they said "new short engine, £4,000 please". No thanks said I and there my difficulties started. (by the way, no mention of 5 year engine warranty by them and none asked as I didn't know!)

Do you think I could find a replacement? No way, and given the failure rate not suprising really. Anyway after much digging, managed to source a replacement and had that fitted this week. But what a pig to get the cooling system to work after fitting - the garage (non Toyota) were pulling their hair out, but eventually got it to work after much bleeding and manipulation (anyone else had this?).

Anyway, it now runs sweet as a nut.

So, then I went on the net and found this..........aaaaaaaah!!!!

So the dilemma, keep it or get shot?

Still ongoing with the oil issue. car in for it's thrid oil check this morning. It's going to be driven all the way to Cornwall and back in the next weeks or so - kinda hoping the oil loss shows up better then and Toyota will agree to sort problem without any conditions.

At moment checking oil at 1000 mile intervals as Toyota want permission to strip engine and take bore measurements. If bad then they will fix under warranty if not bad then they would come to some agreement re costs to fix the problem i.e. they pay some and we do. Very vague, very risky on our part financially and not very helpful at the end of the day. They are buying time until the warranty runs out next month!

Still not happy.
