:( why would the climate control want a light sensor..... surely it is the eye for the internal alarm. If you mean at the front of the dash in front of steering wheel looks like a black smarties lid?

It's a light sensor for the climate control.

Actually you're both wrong, it's the GPS sensor for the sat-nav. :)

Are we sure :D

Top five things it might be:

1. A very small plastic tortoise

2. A listening device so Mr T can spy on us

3. A smarties lid - what do you mean you didn't get your complimentary smarties - they were in the passport with the paint stickers

4. Ejector seat button

5. A device for sparking sparkling conversation on forums :D

I have to agree with SMW that it is a sunload sensor (light sensor) for the climate control. I've just had to change mine, so I can be fairly sure of that ! If the sun suddenly comes out, it senses that and works out that the car is likely to heat up quicker (greenhouse effect), so it boosts the A/C in advance.

The GPS antenna for the satnav is actually under the plastic of the dash.

hibby ;)

could it be a light sensor for the courtesy lights as the map style ones only come on at night when car unlocked or locked?

Anyone a toyota mechanic?

Why would covering up a Smarties cap affect the sat-nav?

Doh....

What's the sensor for on the FRONT of the auto-dip rear-view mirror for then, eh? I think it's for the boot light..

I know it's not the sat nav transmitter as thats stuck to the top of the windscreen right behind the rear view mirror.

It could be a light sensor but mine dose not have climate control so I can't say.

If it was a light sensor for climate control and you opened your door at 3 in the morning and the interior light came on.....would the AC come on as well. Bit silly if you ask me. I mean why would you need your AC on at 3 in the moring in the UK. Normally you would have to turn up the heater.

Sensor behind rearview mirror = Rainsensor

Cap on the dashboard = Climate Control Light Sensor

Satnav receiver antenna = under the dashboard.

The light sensor pupose is to control cooled air direction

through vents.

When sunny = air is directed to dasboard air vents when

system is in auto mode.

clever eh....

so what other clever things can it do? Generally? Also on MK2 versions never really sure what the mid-points on the air director do have read manual loads of times but still none the wiser

Rainsensor ?????????????? Their is no mention any where in my book about a rain sensor and even if it was why the hell is it on the inside - not going to detect much rain behind my rear view mirror. (Unless another coke can explodes due to heat again - god that made a mess)

Ahh you need a T3-x Sir.

:D

The windscreen wipers decide on their own when it is raining

Though you can tweek the sensitivity

even detects when the person in front has washed their window

I wondered how the climate control decided where to pump the cold air, somedays its on my feet, others in my face, other up the windscreen. :bookworm:

The sensor on the front of the mirror measures ambiant light so it knows when to dim the rear-view mirror to stop those nast cars behind dazzling you.

Actually there are two light sensors controlling the dimming of the rear-view mirror. The one on the front off the mirrors measures the ambient light. There is another sensor at the back of the mirror looking backwards. The mirror electronics measures the difference between the sensors and dims the mirror accordingly.

Next time you have a car behind you and the mirror has dimmed, try covering the backwards sensor with your finger and you will fool the mirror to clear again.

Some cars have this function disabled when you put the car in reverse, after all that's when you need a good rear-view in the first place. Other autos have also dim function on the outside mirrors.

The rain sensor is optical. It sends out light and looks for reflections from guess what?

Raindrops on the windscreen
