Thinking Of Buying A Gt4 Any Advice Please?

I am after a cheapish fast car (do not want to much debt!) and seem to have noticed that the GT4 that ran from 91-94 is very good value. I do prefer the looks of the later model but it is much more expensive. Is this model any good? As it seems to be slightly cheaper than the Pulsar GTI-R that I have also looked at (similar age), which I think is pig ugly! I fancy an import as I they are supposed to be more powerful, what is the exact BHP figure for this model? I have also looked at the Nissan 200 SX but I was not impressed (not that quick standard), the FTO again I am unsure of its looks, and the Imprezza is stupid money and the WRX import is extortion to insure. The main thing that puts me off this car is the age, although I have had several old Nissan's and these have been superb. The car would be a second car for weekend use as I have another small car for commuting, so if they are really heavy on petrol (I assume they are) it is not a problem. My main concern is reliability as I live in the middle of nowhere and my local Toyota dealer is complete sh*t who will not touch imports and local specialists do not exist. Do they rust badly? And what do they drive like? I will have to drive one, but again I will have to travel all the way to Manchester (130 miles away) or something as it is total rubbish here for cars out of the ordinary (I live in Cumbria!). I have also looked at MR2 turbos and drove one which I liked (94 model, very fast) but they are slightly impractical as I sometimes like to go off for weekends and like a bit more room for luggage! Basically I just wondered are they cheap for a reason? (Although Sierra Cosworths still seem to go for a mint, I could never figure that out!). Or is it just lack of image or something?

clutch at about 50k, cambelt at 60k or 5yrs, coolant 50k, plugs 50k, oil change 4.5k. very reliable cars, although 90-94 ones aren't very quick. have a strong gearbox and driveshafts so you shouldn't really have any problems. and most will be uk models.

the 90-94 models arn't very quick? well they have 200bhp+ the 0-60 isn't amazing but is late 6's, the mid range power is good and handling kicks all the other Toyota asses!!!!:yes::thumbsup:

By the way the Imprza WRX is ******* on wheels. The STI is the really sports car.

Anyway i would say definately go for a GT4. Honestly you will never regret it.

I read about 1 somewhere, but it looked like a shopping trolly! It better be 4WD and a turbo! They need to kick ***** in the rallys so why not bring back the 1 of the most successful rally beasts ever!!

in the dry it wouldn't be able to beat an mr2 or supra. handling is just safe, nothing exciting. you're only saying it's great because it's got 4wd but that only counts when the roads are wet, in the dry it certainly isn't anything special.

toyota need to sort their act out and get a new gt4, new fast mr2 and new supra. they don't have a single performance car in their line up and they're the biggest car manufacturer so that's ***** poor.

Toyota wont bring out a new GT4 because they arent in the WRC anymore.

They have decided not to do a fast MR2 because its not deemed as a performance car, rather a roadster now.

There are rumours of a new supra but it truly will be a supercar, probably using the 4.3ltr lexus engine with a turbo or two.

And Toyota arent the biggest manufacturer, GM were but i think Ford have taken the lead now. B)

Sorry, also. You said "in the dry it wouldn't be able to beat an mr2 or supra", what do you mean?

In a straight race? Or round a track?

Because the GT4 has better handling than the MR2 and the Supra because of the 4WD and there is no denying that.

And in a straight line?

The jap Supra (stock 280bhp) and Jap GT4 (stock 255bhp ST205) do the quarter mile both in about 13secs and the supra wins by about 0.3secs.

I hear the MR2 Turbo Jap (stock 220bhp) has a 0-60 of aout 5.5-6secs?

The Import st205's do 0-60 in less than 5.5secs.

But i guess you probably mean the ST185, i have never driven one of these so i cant say anything about those.

Jap spec rev1 was 225bhp, the rev3+ Turbo was 245bhp stock and has a sheet time of 5.3.....

we can all think what we like, but the fact is that our country is wet most of the time! If you have a really powerful RWD car u won't ever feel safe when ur driving hard...and in the dry, the GT4's handle as good as Supra & MR2 easily!! And u all know this. Each model has its best qualities, the supra is FU*KING FAST! the MR2 Turbo's are very quick and both look nice, but the GT$ handle FU*CKING WELL! thats there best point, there not as fast as the other 2 but they are rally cars, the others arn't, kid yourselfs if u like but each car has its good point....

Not as fast as the other two?

I've had my GT4 hit over 160mph, fair play the supra is able to probably touch 180mph but the mr2? I doubt that can touch 150mph.

The corolla ae111 would have been the daddy if toyota had created a performance version of it, but they never did. SODS :censor:

Saying that the gt4 is great :D :D my mate has an celica rc and thats very nice he also had the carlos sainz version until it got smashed up :D :D I was going to buy a 95 gt4 but like my corolla too much :help: hehe
