Yaris Gs - Clunky Gears

Hi all, I'm new to this forum as I have just bought a used 1.0 VVTi Yaris GS for my partner.

I'm extremely worried now because I foolishly let the guy that sold it to me convince me that all Yaris's suffer from the following:

When you change into second gear it's very notchy and you almost have to click it into gear. This only happens in second and everything else is smooth, there is no stick vibration and the car generally runs beautifully.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and knows what the fault was?

I'm in a panic as my partners last car was reduced to a wreck due to gearbox problems and I talked her into having a Yaris because it was Japanese and reliable!

Any comments at all would be appreciated!

Cheers

The gears in general are yes slightly more clunky, compared with other cars which have very smooth changes, i forget the actual technical reson for this, but thats they way they were designed.

However if your worried that it is over clunky more of a crunch to get into gear, then maybe speak to a garage or even toyota to check it over. When was its last service??

Hi Chuck,

The car was last serviced at 46000 miles by Toyota, it's now done 51000 miles.

I certainly wouldn't say it's crunching into gear, the gears themselves seem to be running well, it's more a case of having to put extra effort to get it into second and then it sort of clicks in. I'm no mechanic but it feels like a problem nearer the gearstick than the actual gearbox perhaps. Was looking for some reassurance from a fellow Yaris owner that might have experienced the same thing but it's obviously not a common problem (as reported by the seller...how naiive am I?)

Thanks

Mines was getting fairly notchy until I had the grearbox oil changed a couple of weeks ago - much nicer now.

Unless it crunches or whirrs then your gearbox is fine. Change the gearbox oil, and pack your gearstick linkage with a load of grease. Should "help" the problem. But as said most Yaris have notchy gears, some more then others. The fact that only 2nd is giving you trouble is a little more worrying, but I'm sure it's fine.

Mine has prgressively got worse..

Going to change the gearbox Oil (when it stops raining) and see what happens.

Thanks for your comments everyone. My only concern is that if it is just a question of lubrication why would it ony affect one gear? I really am rubbish mechanically, is there anything else that could perhaps physically cause a problem slotting the stick into second?

Cheers

:help:

I think the oil is due for a change, no biggy

Its not a problem buddy, they all do that! Mine is sometimes pretty hard to get into 2nd, completely natural, its a characteristic!

Bought mine with approx 11K miles on the clock.

Found 1st to 2nd gear a bit weird at first, cause it was almost like there was a slight pause before it'd change up.....

I also got a 1.0L VVT-i Yaris and I experience the same exact issue as everyone stated. kind of disappointing...

Feeling a bit better for hearing that chaps, one thing you, have none of you brought this problem up with Toyota as it seems that some of you have a silky smooth gearchange and now more than one of us has second gear weirdness going on!

My 1.0 gls is like that! I asked toyota about it but said there's nothing wrong. Which is strange because this garage would normally rob our money.

I find 2nd is the worst and 3rd can be a bit odd too. My new TS is ok though, feels a bit tricky at times but nowhere near like the old one. If i take my time changing and dip the clutch quickley its usually nice and smooth. Yet other times i think 'oh no, its happening again! :crybaby: '

Yaris gearboxes are a bit odd, maybe its due to the short clutch travlel catching us out.....

I have heard of this before and it is a known "issue".

What I don't know is if it is an actual defect or just a "characteristic" as some have put it.

I haven't experienced it myself, but I think I've got the same transmission as your Yaris T-sport (C150)

I have heard of people having the shift linkage adjusted for this.

Welcome to the club, good to see another 1.0 GS here. I dont have any problems with 2nd gear, but it doesnt seem to like going into reverse sometimes, its usually ok though so I'm not losing any sleep because of it

I also have trouble putting it into reverse and my car is fairly new, sometimes it takes about 2 or 3 tries to get it into reverse.

Sometimes it feels like it doesn't go all the way back, and if I reverse sometimes it goes into gear, other times it comes out of gear and makes a slight whirring noise.

Lately i've noticed it's hard to put it into second gear, but I think it's my driving, as I have not had this untill recently.

Maybe it's harder to put it into second as it is the most used gear, when I come to a junction I always put it into second, that's what I was taught to do on my driving lessons, and I take it most people on her do it to, the odd few times it goes into third is at a large roundabout, or junction you can approach faster as you are able to see what traffic is on the road. (just a thought)

The gears on bot my yarii were very notchy especially going into second!

To get reverse gear you are supposed to put the gear selector into neutral for 1 or 2 seconds!

This is to stop you from accidently selecting revers whilst going along!

CB

Never knew that, I'll try that next time it plays up, its only very rare that it happens, probably once a month, just doesnt seem like it wants to go in

Yeah, it doesn't go into reverse sometimes 'cos of something called the synchromesh, its stops you putting it into a low gear or reverse when you're whizzing along!

I get that sometimes too...but it's just a characteristic of the car apparently.

Not ever had the "clunking" problem tho, but I do find 2nd gear is the hardest one to get the car into out of all the gears, I did used to make the mistake of not depressing the clutch close enough to the ground in my old T3 tho which didnt help the gear change much..the firmer you press it down the better it goes.

Yes the gears can be temperemental at times - anyone at Brunters who saw me crunch them three times trying to get in reverse will understand.....

Oh the pain and humiliation!:lol:

Exactly what i said. well sort off. I dip the clutch quickly and firmly, making sure i dont move the gear stick too soon.

I believe thats what makes it feel so unpleasant, timing is crucial.

I have an 80,000 mile Yaris S which suffered the same clunky problem. I had the gear linkages replaced last week by newer ones. This is apparently a common issue, and the newer linkages are better. Mine were replaced under my Toyota Extended Warranty, although I have heard of it being a recal modification by other people.
