Xl Starting Problem?

I'm kinda confused at the minute with my car because I just replaced my starter with a second hand one as I was having starting problems, but now I don't think I solved the problem because anytime I start the car (first time in particular) their is still a very late start and it sounds strange like its skipping or something as it did with the original starter. Can someone tell me if this is even a starter problem or what else could it possibly be, because its really annoying me to think it won't start again???
