1996 (p) Solaire

My rear wiper has stopped working on my 1996 Corolla Solaire 1332cc.

The fact that the washer and front wipers still work ok suggested that the fuse was not blown but I checked it anyway.... it's ok. I removed the panel covering the motor and lock parts in the tailgate and checked (pressed and generally fiddled about with) any electrical connectors I could find in the vicinity of the motor. This didn't improve the situation. I'm not an electrician but I thought the fuse system would protect the motor from burnout?? Before I take the motor out and Shell out for a replacement, can anyone suggest something I may have missed, could the switch stalk be at fault? what's the best way to test to find the culpruit?

I appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks.
