is it so yo can turn the volume up/down easier? so you can click it in a turn it up/down or make it big and turn it up/down?

No, the whole truth is that it adds 10bhp!

supposedly it does stuff if you have the tns-200 or tns-300 sat nav installed (at huge expense...).

The rubby thing isn't particularly ergonomic - as a product designer the whole "left hand drive radio controls" (the volume knob is always on the wrong side for us - just look!) drives me nuts.

I always thought it was ergonomics as well!

Corr Al - you really do know a lot dontcha! Full of information you are!

On a serious note I always thought that if you press it in you get lipstick springing out like Penelope Pitstops Compact Pussycat - I was gonna take my in for a warranty repair because mine doesn't work.....:lol:

it does nothing at all as far as i can tell and i have sat nav and doesnt change anything. the only thing i can think of, is that it can be hidden more when happy with the volume, then pop it out wen u want to alter the volume

Alan

The volume / on / off knob in the IS is on the right of the unit - good eh ?

 and in some Honda Civics too, but I can't think of any other examples right now...

My Dad's 5-series has to be one of the worst. No wonder it has controls on the steering wheel - the volume knob is practically in front of the passenger. I'm no technophobe, bt don't get me started on the i-drive...

I allways thought that it switched the sat nav display on those cars fitted with sat nav.

I dont have standard sat nav on mine so I have wired the button up to produce an Economy/Sport mode.

of course, the radio controls may not be the easiest to reach...but then you shouldn't be touching it when driving at all!!

For people without remote steering wheel controls it’s used for the volume.

For people with satellite navigation it’s also used to scroll through the menu options.

As for way it pushes in and out, I would think it would be along the same lines as cup holders in other cars, if it’s not needed all the time hide it, aesthetics I believe.

The pushing in mutes sat nav.

No it doesn't.

The volume for the sat nav is controlled within the sat nav menu. As someone has already mentioned the knob is for the radio/CD volume and for the menu for the navigation unit.

So really, what is it for?

Told you its an Economy/Sport mode button ;)

But seriously..................... I understand that it is used to toggle through the menu on those fitted with Satnav

But I prefer the economy/sport mode explaination :lol:
