Carina - Alarm/immobiliser Problems

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a second hand Carina, and the key fobs have not worked since I bought it. I only use the actual key to access the car and have not used the alarm. Recently the alarm started going off for no reason. I disconnected the Battery, but that didn't make any difference (I suspect the Battery had gone flat). I turned off the alarm inside the engine using the small key that came as part of the set, and that stopped the alarm.

However, I have since re-charged the Battery in an attempt to start the car, with no luck. The only thing that happens is the indicators flash (as it seems that the alarm is still activated and the immobiliser has kicked in).

If I turn the alarm unit back on, it keeps going off. I suspect that the only way I can reset is via the key fobs (which would be expensive to replace).

Is it possible to disable the immobiliser and/or the alarm unit? Or do something without buying new key fobs?

Thanks

Ok...

Replacing the keyfobs - this would actually be replacing the ECU, keyfobs and ancillary bits - you dont want to do that.

The fobs may just have become unsequenced.

Replace the lithium button cell in the fobs and re-sequence them using the following:

Make sure you press a button on the fob, with no Battery in - to drain any stored charge. Now when the fobs have new batteries, sit inside the car, or stand by the front driver side. Press and hold one of the fob buttons until it flashes (pressing it for about 15 seconds should do it)

This should re-sync your fob with the ECU.

I had to do this several times with my old Carina. I can never remember which button i pressed, or even if it is both. Try each combination until it works.

if the above doesn't do it, you may need to get the car to a dealer to recode it. if the fobs are the original, then you should be able to do this. if not, it is new ECU time.

That's brilliant. My Carina 97 stopped responding to my keyfob a few weeks back, and I couldn't turn off the alarm, so I simply disconnected the siren and left it like that, using the key to lock and unlock it.

Now I've sorted it in a few seconds. You just need to press the top (lock) button for a few seconds.

Cheers,

Matt
