Mpg From A 1.8 T4 Auto 2004

I regularly get late 40s early 50s mpg out of mine on a long run. 'Round the town I average 34-36mpg. I very rarely use the sequential box I tend to leave it in 'drive' all the time. And, as you may have guessed, I don't 'tear a**e' everywhere.

 advice re mpg for 2004 1,8 vvti auto

pls

Same figures as Dane really, using sequential box does reduce mpg a little but not too much. I get 33-38mpg around town (with aircon on all the time) , and up to 48mpg on a run with family in the car( with aircon on permanant) :D .I don't believe the computer, but instead work it out manually how many miles covered by how many litres of fuel used to fill it back up again, then converted into gallons.

Hope this helps,

Nick...........

Same here, except for a recent run up the A34 when we left too early and cruised for a hundred miles or so at 60 mph. That gave 54.7 mpg although I was playing 'nudge the MPG meter" . Not bad for a petrol automatic.

Would these figures be considered good? I ask as one of the things that is stopping me opting for an Avensis currently is the lack of an auto diesel - I want an auto car (fed up stuck in traffic jams changing gear all the time) and, although I have never had either before, a diesel too.

Am I right in thinking that MPG has improved dramatically in recent years even over cars which are just 5 or 6 years old?

So the auto is one of these boxes that can be either manual or auto?

I quite fancied an auto as well and was disappointed there wasn't one so went for manual diesel.

The figures folks have given are very similar to what I used to get from my 1.8 Carina manual. It was a real culture shock to go from 50+ mpg on a run to the 40ish I got from an Avensis 2.0 petrol.

The diesel is excellent though. 60mpg is quite possible on A road cruising and the overall mpg since I've had it is about 50 just driving normally, air con on most of the time.

Might sound a bit rude on this forum, but I recently tried a 3.0V6 Vectra Diesel Automatic and it was superb, got 53MPG, not bad for 0-62 in 8 seconds, they do the full range of petrol and diesels in auto's from 1.8 - 3.2.

Amazing MPG (infact unbelivable MPG figures posted here, and better than many small hatchbacks!!).. I just hope my 1.8 VVTi auto does the same :-)

My Mercedes E240 auto only does around 26mpg

hi there BTW... You're a member of MBclub.co.uk as well :-)

Thanks Sooty

I get about 33-34.5mpg from my 1.4 Polo auto on an A road commute.

Polo is also considerably slower, about 14.5 secs 0- 60mph!!

Having had one 36mpg (trip said 37) a 35mpg (trip said 36)

both mainly free flowing A and B roads which is not far off the figures I was getting on my Polo on the same work commute route.

and a recent 31.2 (trip said 33.4) same work commute, mixed with a small percentage of urban, but with some idling when I left the car on with aircon to prevent the kids/wife melting in the sun when I had parked up (and I went into do a shop)

I was expecting to get higher on my work commute seeing as I don't encounter much traffic on the A and B roads and I'm currently feeding the car premium 97 Esso Supreme which is supposed to give a few extra miles.

Car has brand new air filter and fresh oil, and I am really !Removed! footing it around, being feather like on the throttle and coasting the car as much as I can. - The Avensis auto, coasts for a very long distance, probably as far as 1/4 of a mile without having to use the accelerator pedal. I find at 25/30mph speeds (due to the engine creep of the auto) it practically cruises/powers itself along by itself! Just needs a dab of the throttle to maintain the momentum.

Also the figures I was getting with the Polo was not being light footed with standard Esso 95

I checked the tyres and for some reason the nearside front tyre was at about 41+psi instead of 32! Could be this has a bearing.

High tyre pressures give better fuel economy. I had a friend who had a company car but he had to pay the petrol so he kept the tyre pressures very high. The tyres were worn in the middle but the company had to pay for those so he did not care.

Interesting physics, and interesting strategy
