De-catting?

I'm looking for info on de-catting a N/A Mk3. I understand from what I've read at various places that you can get a bit more power from doing this?

I've been considering it, but wanted to check for any downsides involved in doing so, particularly with regards to it causing any problems with future MOT's.

A MKIII doesn't need a CAT to get through the emissions because of its age.

Can't think of anydownsides in all honesty.

  • 3 weeks later...

Rather than start a new thread, I'll just hi-jack my old one since it's relevant.

I had my eye on a de-cat pipe on eBay, but I missed it.

Anyone know where I can get one from, to fit a Mk3 non-turbo?

forget a decat pipe alone.. it wont do much..especially on a n/a... go for a full system.

True, true.....Go with a 2.5 " (62mm?) all the way back from the manifold. This will give you the most power for your money, and keep your low end torque. I used a Magnaflow 17" x 4" x 9" 'straight-through' muffler on the tail, with a 24" (600mm?) straight-through 4" (100mm?) diameter glass-pack in the middle (called a resonator by some). It gave me quicker get up, and a very pleasant 'deep' tone.

A stock turob system is 2.5" its a good upgrade for a non turbo.

FYI if your pockets arn't deep... And yes expect about 5-10 HP.

in the case of my turbo car... I gained 75RWHP by opening up my electric dump... LOL this was at 20PSI of boost though  and a 2.5" universal cat.. (POS)

A stock turbo system also does not fit an N/A without modifications!

What sort of performance gains could be expected from De-Catting the MKIV N/A. I already have an RSR from the 2nd Cat Back. Would I gain more in the way of low end torque rather than an actual HP gain???
