Do I Need A New Fuel Pump?

Hi,

I have a 94 Carina E 1.6 GS - new to me.

When driving on motorway, after say 10 miles at 75/80 mph the car starts to splutter as though from lack of fuel (intermitent power being applied). When this first happened I stopped and upon opening fuel cap a vacuum was released and car was seemingly fine again.

However I tried driving without the petrol cap to see if the vacuum was the problem - same thing happened again - so maybe coincidence. If I leave the car for a while - it is fine until I get back on motorway (no probs round town). I have had a new fuel filter, exhaust checked for blockages - still problem there - onboard diagnostics don't give a clue.

Is it possible I have wrong fuel cap fitted - would this cause probs, or am I looking at a fuel pump or???

Thanks for any suggestions on this as it's really getting annoying to say the least.

Mark
