Hiya, I am having my land cruiser 2.4 turbo diesel checked over this week and have been told it will cost me around 900 pounds to sort out my fuel pump etc, as the engine lacks power severely, My question is then, does anyone know if it is possible to swap the 2.4 diesel engine to a 3.0ltr and where could I get this done and for approx how much. I live in the Birmingham area uk.

many thanks

chris.

Chris I saw your other post. Before you spend big money on the pump get a compression test done on the engine .

If the engine compression is not up to standard then the pump rebuild is not worthwhile

Your 2.4 will give reasonable power if in good condition and still work out cheaper than a 3lt swap

Well it did turn out to be the pump after all!!! I took it to api injection in Erdington first off he cleaned the injectors and told me that they needed it. But aggreed that this was not the probable cause of the lack of power and told me that the pump is the most likely cause! I still had the prolonged starting problem when it was hot but the car did seem to have slightly better acceleration and power. I tested it last week by going to Wales for the weekend and it managed to get up the mountains alrightish! In other words when going up steep mountain slopes but not the steepest it would grind down to about 10 miles an hour so I turned on the hazzard lights as a string of cars were following me, at least I was in front! I also noticed a little light on the dash board with a piccy of an engine next to it coloured orange that would come on and decide to tell the car to slow down if I were happily cruising at about 70 miles an hour, it seemed like there was some secret satatlite signal that would disable the motor if I exceeded the speed limit! and when I slowed right down and got the engine revs to about 1800 the little light would go off and power would be returned. Hmmm I thought arrrr well if it blows up on me I'll call the aa and get them to take it back home for me and get a new engine! That'll cure it! Any ways it so happens that I didn't need to the car got me to north wales and back fine it was just an odd thing to experience when the engine decided to more or less turn itself on and off at will. I didn't overtake anything but overall it was fine as it was. The biggest problem was starting it from hot and accelerating from junctions as it looked like I was one over cautious driver especially in a beast like this.

I came back on the sunday evening and took it back to api injection on Monday and he said he could put a manual pump on it instead of the electric computerized gizmo and I was happy to rid of this techy stuff cus I'm an old timer for cars they used to make em simple to fix but nowadays you gotta plug a damn computer in the engine just to find out what's wrong! Gone are the days of listening to the engine and taking a good guess what to start on to fix them. Then I get a phone call telling me that they can't change the pump to a manual as I have an automatic gearbox! grrrr I was having my doubts about this firm but he said he got an electrical pump off someone by chance at a good price (he wouldn't tell me how much mind) and would I mind if he shoved that one in so I had no choice really and he went ahead at the aggreed price for the manual conversion of 500 squids. He changed the pump 12 month warranty and put a new timing belt on for me and did it by Thursday.

Boy oh boy what a difference it made!!! This car is a blast from the past now, I really am surprised at how powerfull this beast is now with such a small engine and a diesel too. I tested it out again going to north wales this weekend just gone and it flew down there. Still groans about the welsh hills mindyou but you gotta get some beafy big engine 4.2 etc or petrol to cruise up them. So all in all I am very happy with api injection they done me proud at a good cost.

All I need now is a rear end crankshaft oil seal replacing which is cheap but the gear box gotta come off so gonna be darn expensive!!! but then I got a new car/truck and I have just converted the hook eye to a fully blown towbar for under a tenner by using the hook eye as a template onto 1/4 plate angle iron drilling four holes for fixing the angle iron bracket to the car and another piece welded and bolted to the first in the opposite face and drilling to larger holes to enable me to bolt on the towball.

Happy camper here I come including my 6 berth caravan. I'll let everyone know what happens when I do.

See ya all soon

chris.
