I am the proud owner of a 1986 Celica 2.0 GT Auto which has been my trusty steed for nearly 8 years. However, a small problem has appeared which has left me/my mechanic/the RAC man somewhat baffled and I was wondering if anyone else out there has suffered the same problem or may be able to shed any light on the soloution.

The problem is that the car has difficulty in restarting after I've done a short journey i.e less than 10 mins. If I leave it for 30-45 mins it restarts like nothing ever went wrong. Things developed further yesterday when the car just cut out whilst waiting at the traffic lights (v. embarrassing, especially when on a red route). I waited for 45 mins and again it started as if there was no previous problem.

It has been suggested that it could be a fuel pump problem which fills me with dread as Toyota have just quoted me £190 just for the pump + 5 days delivery from Belgium + whatever labour costs may entail.

If this is the case I may have to put my trusty steed down which is the last thing I want to do. So, if anyone out there hs any ideas - I'm all ears.

Thanks for your help.

Steve

Sounds as if it's running too rich, which would account for the fact it won't start when it's warm as the fuel vapour 'floods' the engine when it's hot and won't combust properly.

Not sure about what engine you've got but could it be the carburetter or ECU that's at fault?

Sorry not to have been of more help.....

If it`s the 2.0 litre it`ll be the 3S-GE motor. Fuel injected. Look for a blocked fuel filter or as you stated a faulty fuel pump. Although i would suspect the filter in the 1st instance. Mainly because it`s the cheapest to replace. If it turns out to be the pump try getting a S/H one from one of the many jap breakers.
