Does anyone know how much it is for the licensing costs to stream mp3s through shoutcast?

Always been interesting in setting up TOC radio!

And you think the bandwidth usage is bad just now! :!Removed!:

I dont know, but thats an excellent idea Steve!

Instead of working at work and listening to the radio there, why not doss on TOC all day while listening to TOC radio!

Excellent stuff!

I currently listen to local radio (Leicester Sound - GWR) via Media Player, click a link on their site and you get a constant stream of radio - in real time too. I think its great but I have no idea how much it would cost to set up and run.....

Licensing will be expensive... bandwidth for shoutcast servers is also extremely high but if successfull you could get a pretty good sponsor I'm sure.

Note, when you are licenced you can't just play music obtained illegaly... you have to get it from the correct source and therefore are restricted in what you can do with it.

P.S. Sam Broadcaster 2 is better than Winamp but uses the Shoutcast and other ways of streaming music.

wonder what sort of bandwidth we are talking here? As in how much

also i was thinking of set times that the radio would run.

From Shoutcast DNAS readme:

* Enough bandwidth to run the server. If you want to broadcast to 100

listeners at 24kbps, you'll need about 24kbps*100 = 2,400kbps = 2.4Mbps

of bandwidth. That's about 2 T1 lines worth of bandwidth. Trying to

push 100 128kbps listeners down your 768kbps cable modem isn't going

to work :)

Shell sysadmins will be *very* unhappy if you consume their available

bandwidth and server CPU without their consent. SHOUTcast is a highly

demanding program of bandwidth. A T1 line can only theoretically support

about 60 listeners if no other traffic is on that T1. Additionally, each

listener takes up a thread on the server operating system, which can slow

some operating systems if allowed to expand beyond the limits of the system.

If you throw up a SHOUTcast server unbeknownst to the sysadmin with 50+

maximum users, you had better be prepared to face the consequences of your

actions. As a fellow sysadmin, I offer this to you as your ONLY WARNING.

Pick a smart number of maxusers for your server. Calculate by taking the

available bandwidth you have, multiplying by 0.9 to account for overhead,

and dividing by the bitrate you want to serve at. For example, an ADSL

connection @ 768kbps upstream * 0.9 / 24kbps ~= 29 maximum users. Again,

set this number too high, and when you reach the limit of bandwidth ALL

the streams will start to skip.

Very interesting idea, very ambitious as well I might add.

Given the costs (both licencing and bandwidth) a sponsor or two definately wouldn't hurt. I'm sure that won't be a problem for TOC after all look at all the discounts you've managed to arrange for us Goldies.

Assuming it all went to plan, what type of music would you be thinking of?

yeah bit of rolf harris and stuff.

I was not looking to stream it here.. but the server we are based on do support shoutcast from what i can see. They support game servers and there main core is gaming servers.

and I think they have just a tad more than a T1 connection :D :D

Its worth looking into for sure.. even just to find out pricing.

I would be interested if anyone else knows about it.

www.inx-gaming.co.uk run 2 radio stations and would happily give you a well informed quote for sure. Very much doubt they would sponsor though.
