how do i change the clutch in my starlet? will i have to drop the engine and gearbox out underneath the car and change it that way or is there an easier way?

Rich.

you don't need to drop the engine out.

the easiest way is to disconnect both driveshafts going into the diff (you need a ball joint separator for this - but you'd need that with your method).

then the gearbox bolts to the engine around the flywheel and a couple of other spots IIRC. undo them and you'll be able to pop the clutch off.

just a tip, when you jack the car up. Make sure you jack it up fairly high, I would jack the back of the car up then stick breeze blocks or thick bits of wood under the back wheels and then jack the front up, i find it much easier to work on the car like this.

hope this helps  - is your clutch slipping btw?

Yep - gearbox comes off the engine ok from underneath.

Get yourself some gearbox oil while your at it (SAE 75/90) - good idea to change it when you do the clutch and get some anti-sieze grease(copper-slip) - remove the clutch release arm when the gearbox is out and lubricate the pivot point with copper-slip(get's rid of the annoying creak when you press the clutch down).

Dont forget to disconnect the Battery before you start and support the engine with a jack and a block of wood under the sump when the gearbox is coming out(dont leave the engine "dangling" on one engine mount)

cheers for the info guys, nah its not slipping mate, im changing my engine over to the 5efhe and using the existing 4efe gearbox, so i figured while ive got the engine and box separated i may as well change the cutch as the car has done 96,000 miles on its first clutch.

hmm, btw, i just got told that you can use the toyota coralla 1.4 6 speed box in basically any front wheel toyota...why not go for that box, i probably will when its time...

btw scutch, where'd you get your 5efhe? not sure if i asked you before

yeah i was aware of that box, i intend on getting that box when i turbo the fhe, as i wanna try out my shorter ratios on a more powerful engine for a while, plus i cant afford the 6 speeder yet... :crybaby: :P

i got my fhe from andrew (toyotasera.co.uk) engine came without box, but with a full sera loom, ecu and all the usual stuff... cant wait to fit it!! :D
