to get striaght to the point : ive messed up the suspension on my paseo ..mainly by racing in the country!

i am therefore planning to spend some money on suspension upgrades.

what do people suggest to improve handling?..i would also like to lower it!

im thinking:

kyb gas shocks---- i really want adjustables tho!?

anti roll or strut brace?

lowering springs?

any advice welcome and needed!!! also does any1 know good cheap suppliers that have these parts for paseos?

cheers guys

Follow the link to my garage, mine is now finally sorted how I want it and with the mods I've done it handles really well now. It'll still cost in the region of 500 quid upwards I would think if you shop around but worth every penny It depends how far you want to go really

Hi mate,

If you want to pop over to rotherham i can sort you out some coilovers.

which coilovers?

oh and niv, if you wanna lower the car, its better going for coilovers basically because its best to match the damping and spring rates of a suspension to ensure that theyre directly compatible. more than often people will just get the springs that lower most, and just any old dampers....baad, because seeing as these springs dont really have a much higher spring rate (only 25 - 40%), and are a lot lower so are effectively using a lot less of the damper travel, you will get a bouncy ride which is very bad cause you will be hitting the bump stops due to the reduced travel.

as toby said in another thread, coilovers are a much better alternative seeing as the shock body is shortened, and the spring rate would have been matched to the bound and rebound (the damping) of the shocks, and usually the spring rates are a lot higher so they provide less of a drop (unless you adjust it) but as the spring rate is quite a bit higher you wont be left with a bouncy low suspension

and a word of warning about the strut brace...it will not fit unless you have an intake kit on your car...as i found to my misfortune

edit: sorry, just read your sig, can you give me more details of your coilovers? i.e. design, price, spring rates, damping etc...

i agree riko, but u gotta admit, the only down side to coilovers is the price!!! :P

i suppose, but i mean you get what you pay for...you can get some moderately priced coilovers which are great quality, then if you ramp up for the race spec ones, then is when the price gets a bit silly. mind you, id buy those race spec ones, seeing as i want to race this thing on track days...but im (nearly) 19, a student, doesnt have any part time jobs = no money, nada dinero :crybaby:

and i mean, some people will just go for the £50 lowering springs and £40 shocks cause theyre cheap...and thats £90 for a bouncy, harsh, underdamped ride, but hey, the buyer doesnt care, the car is lower...makes it all better <_< hehe

how much are we talkin 4 "Moderatly priced coilovers"?

does this mean that DazH does not get a good ride quality from his seo?!

cheers

well ainsml just told me about his coilovers and i think they are very reasonably priced conisdering what you get, and the fact that they are " tailored " to your needs. and I mean, as i said before, if you just get " any " lowering springs and " any " shocks, more than likely, the spring rate and damping will not be matched, i suppose you could bypass this by opting for some adjustable shocks, but thats only a vague adjustment.

well, coilover prices that are reasonable, ive seen from £400 - £600, which is a great range really

No mate, I fitted KYB shocks and only lowered it a sensible height. Always been a believer of sorting out the suspension gives better gains per pound than anything else. The key is making the necessary adjustments to stiffen the chassis so your suspension works as it was intended to.

And Riko I only paid the price I did for the parts I have fitted as I'm in the trade, they're not cheap, as you say, to everyone ;)

To Joe public you're looking around 300 quid for the springs and shocks alone.

well i have found some for that price ;) one are kyb's and others are customs *hint* *hint* *ainsml* *hint*, and just some others ive seen go around

i dont think i can afford coilovers :(

i will get the next best thing : kyb adjustables n lowering springs(30-35mm)

does anybody know where 2 get hold of kyb adjustables for seos?

well ive got some kyb gr2's up in america that im desparately trying to ship here...once i do i could sell em to you for £200 all round...but theyre not the sportiest of shocks, theyre pitched as a general upgrade, better ride, better handling etc..

I notice you live in Sheffield mate, try our branch down there Andrew Page Ltd, tell em I recommended them and tell em I'm Assistant Manager at Newcastle. If you catch one of the lads in a good mood he might sort you a decent price :lol:

Thats killed your sale! Got my KYBs from a local motor factors in Southampton, they were about £40 each for rears. TBH I reckon the original Toyotas gave a smoother ride, these KYBs seem to clonk a bit too. Genuine Toyotas are about £65 ish!!

Posted

yeah, but iirc the fronts are slightly more expensive than the rears, which would tally up to about £200...yeah that sucks, i so desperately wanna sell these kybs when i eventually get them in !! :crybaby:

ohhh god im gettin a bit confused now! basically i want to lower the ride and herd that it is best to change original shocks at the same time as they tend to leak..r toyota ones really better then kyb gas?

hmm, i dunno, i remember blue saying they were clunky, but then there was an issue with paseos in that the strut mount had some metal fitting that didnt fit good and hence allowed for clunking suspension...even dazh had this, but he got the trd strut mounts and it solved it...so you could get the kyb strut mounts cause theyre cheaper, should sort the clunking

Its down to personal taste really, Im old (37) and like a smooth comfy ride, if it means the car will bounce more and not handle as well so be it. Thats why I prefer the originals. But, if you want a better handler then I guess the KYBs are best. The clonks are caused by KYB putting in some big washers to take the place of the original Toyota parts and they just dont work properly. I found an old washer lying about to replace one of them and its OK but one side still clonks... does my head in! Save up for the coilovers is my honest advice.

ditto

strange that, kyb claim that their gr-2 shocks are their " control " shocks with a more luxurious and controlled ride

The shocker has a lip on the top of the shaft that presses against the metal sleeve which is only bonded into the strut mount, eventually this causes the sleeve to wear itself loose. Then the shocker makes a clunking noise as it moves up and down when the washer hits the loose sleeve. If you put a washer either side of the strut mount, ie one underneath and one above the movement of the washers is confined to the rubber part of the mount, meaning the sleeve stays put  And by the way KYB are OE equipment on many Toyotas ;)
