ok guys this topic is kinda linked with my clutch topic, if youve read the clutch topic u'll know by now that i am doing an engine change in my 4efe starlet to a 5efhe. i am going to hire an engine crane but probably wont have it for long so i need to know the best way of removing my 4efe from my car.

i want to keep my 4efe gearbox and will be changing the clutch at the same time as the change, so is it possable to remove the engine and keep the gearbox in the car still attached to the driveshafts? instead of removing the complete engine and box?

i spoke to andrew about this when i collected the engine and he reccommended dropping the engine and box out the bottom of the car and sliding the whole thing out thru the wheelarch, which sounds okay, but i dont really want to be removing driveshafts and suspension components if possable, as i just have a limited time with the crane, so i just want to get the old engine out, change the clutch and get the new one in in a short period of time.

and then i can work out the wiring.

anyone removed a 4e themself?

any opinions welcome.

Rich.

you really need to drop the whole engine out.

you'll have to disconnect the driveshafts and suspension anyway as you won't be able to get your clutch out otherwise.

tips for the day:

1. jack your carup the day before and disconnect all the suspension.

2. get yourself a 1/2" breaker bar, make sure its not some cheap junk, FACOM, Snap on, Sykes Pickavant etc will do perfectly.

3. Make sure you get 6pt sockets

4. remove the radiator, you'll break it otherwise.

you can do a lot of the groundwork beforehand, disconnecting driveshafts and stuff, draining etc., before you need the engine hoist.

Then, attatch the crane, unbolt the engine mounts and remove. So if time is a bit limited with the hoist it shouldn't matter too much, as long as you're prepared for it.

Anyway, most hire shops will do an engine hoist for about £20 per day, so it's not too much to pay if the job drags on a bit. The most it would cost you is £40.

The easiest way is to put the car on axle stands on the highest setting they will go.

Remove radiator. remove any wheelarch inner linings or undertray.

Remove driveshafts from hubs. Disconnect all wiring. Disconnect fuel hoses, disconnect speedo cable and throttle cables. Disconnect clutch slave cylinder.

With the crane reasonably high (so you can lower it), tie up the engine and prepare to lower. Remove the three engine mounts, then carefully lower the engine out. Once on the ground, slide out from underneath.

You may find removing the bonnet is a good idea. 4 screws but makes a lot more working space.

thanks for that andrew, how long should it take to remove the old engine roughly?

IF you doing it slowly and methodically, you should get the engine out in about 3 hours. Its always best to take things at a comfortable place.

The hardest things to undo will be to get the old exhaust off as the nuts will be rusted in. Often a bit of WD40 or heat will get them loose.

Be careful taking the exhaust downpipe off, if u break them i guess it wint matter as ur probably using the new engine manifold anyway. ..

Andrew

Give them a good spray with some PlusGas. Leave for an hour or so ( or overnight ) then they SHOULD come out ok.
