Break Drums And Break Shoes

Hello - found the forum whilst doing a little search on break drums that my Yaris apparently needs to have skimmed and wondered if anybody had any feedback for me, as I am new to the whole dealing with mechanics world.

I actually live in Cyprus, and rather than a UK Yaris, have a Japanesse import version, the limited edition Clavia, which I understand you don't have in the UK. Its a 1.3 engine. Same principle I am assured, just different colour options and little gizmos.

Mechanic tells me that he needed to change the break shoes as these have huge treadmarks - or something along those lines - running across them, also requiring the drums to be 'skimmed' rather than replaced. Cyprus is very dusty, and he recons its a build up of dirt that has caused the groves. :help:

Is this normal? And what can I do to prevent such damage in future?

We work on KM here rather than miles, but its in for its first service in Cyprus at 50,000 KM if that helps the answer.
