i notice on a previous topic that it was mentioned that £200 would swap a revision2 turbo to a revision3. as the 3 has more bhp and boost it would be nice to swap up.

1. is it easy to swap - ie straight swap?

2. where can u get this for £200 from????????? - is this a part ex price?

3. would you recommend this idea or steer clear and keep rev2 turbo?

I didn't notice that post before and am sure I would have spotted it....

Sounds very unlikely that you can change the rev2 for a rev3 turbo... Possibly if you part-ex'd the rev2 engine for a rev3 +£200 it would be possible if you were lucky but then you would also have to pay the man hours to fit the engine, looms, ecu etc, etc.....

the rev 2 turbo and rev3 engine should be a straight swap as the mounts are the same but the looms, ecu etc I believe to be different...

hi rhaines

sorry if my message was a bit misleading, i am only after swapping the actual turbo and not the engine.

the post i referred to was by chavee and is on the same page as this one "mr2 turbo - differences between rev2 and rev3".

is swapping the turbo for £200 realistic and if so where do u think chavee was referring to for this price?

has anyone u know done this?

haven't got a clue on swapping the turbo's over I'm afraid :(

Hi, I think there are a number of differences between the rev2 and rev3 engines that just the turbo, but yes, I believe you can do an exchange turbo fairly easily. You may have to dig a little harder to sort it out, and from my experience with Turbos, £200 may be a litle low in the price bracket.

You might rather spend your money here: http://www.fensport.co.uk/partsfiles/sw20tuning.htm

Where for £180 + Fitting of your hard earned pounds you can make a good 30bhp gain.

Also, in their stage 2 tune they include a mongoose exhaust - I would consider getting a custom exhaust made at Longlife/exhaustsUK and removing the Cat to get the best results. I believe this is the direction I will be going when I get my 3sGTE later on this summer.

thx for advice rich.

i may get a rev3 turbo then do the £180 upgrade!!!! muhahaha raw power.

30bhp? possibly, but you'll need an exhaust on top to help the turbo breathe better.

a ct20b turbo (rev 3) can be bought for £200 (secondhand), seen a few advertised for that, was tempted but skint. all that you need to do to make it fit is lose a bolt from the exhaust side, although in total fitting will take 5hrs plus. with that you'll be able to run 18psi all the way to 7000rpm.

on my rev 1 i run 17psi which lowers to about 14psi above 6k rpm, but with my decat, exhaust, filter, fuel cut defencer i should still be seeing about 260bhp, possibly more. good enough for a 1/4 mile time of low to mid 13s (other people achieved).

also blocked off the vsv so now even when it's below 4c outside it'll still boost 17.

I believe that the rev3 has a different fuel pump and larger injectors, so these would have to be changed too. Also, the ECU will have been programmed differently to match the characteristics of the revised engine.

Posted

yeah but those won't have to be changed to get rev 3 performance all that has to be done to give a rev 1 or 2 the same performance as the rev 3 is either a boost increase or swap the turbos over and run the same boost as the rev 3. simple as that.

I see, would i be right it thinking that the larger injectors would only come into play if you were looking to up the performance further? Seems strange they're fitted to the rev 3 at all unless it's to improve reliability at higher boost?

Posted

injectors only come into play above 300bhp. a rev 1 or 2 could easily fuel for up 300bhp, then you start reaching the injectors limits. they can supply enough fuel for high boost as well.

I seeee thanks for that, I'm a bit dumb when it comes to the later revisions. :)
