Dashboard Illumination Problem

Hey

Im having trouble with my 86 FX-GT. When i turn the headlights on i dont get any light on the dashboard and also no light on the gearstick selection parts. I just replaced my head deck and had 2 wires left over a brown one(read somewhere this is the earth/ground wire)

and also a green one could these have something to do with my problem?? Just wondering if the green should be hooked up to the power (maybe a dimmer wire for the head deck illumination??)

Help would be greatly appreciated

cheers
