:D hehe, would love to but wanna be the only person over here with one ;)

Im going full on with it, gonna strip it out - roll cage - windows being replaced with clear perspects.

Biggest problem is making sure i choose the right supra to start with and the right gearbox and engine.

Looks like im gonna get a white import 6 speed (so i have an intercooler/6 speed/trc and lsd) then im going to use a Rev3 3sgte from an mr2 turbo.

You never know the gearbox may work but im most likely going to have to steal a 6 speed out of an altezza rs200.

The real touring car is 498bhp so i'll aim for 500bhp

Ok I'll concede that the manual is a little notchy and noisy perhaps, but I like it like that, anyway the notchyness pretty much goes away once it’s warmed up a little 

Its slightly unrefined nature lets you know its there, its big and its well capable, its those woolly, spongy gearboxes that I cant stand personally, like the ones you find on many modern cars, in that respect the supra gearbox is a refreshing surprise,

Thats a pretty awesome project, it's going to be drool-worthy once you're done,

out of interest, why the 3sgte (which is the Celica engine?) - I presume to match the touring car regulations on engine size etc? Or is it because you only need so much power for the track and so they picked the lightest engine that can reliably deliver it?

anyway cool project! Maybe see it at a JAE of the future?

cheers,

Louis

Cheers, yeah should be cool once its done.

The engine is used in the Celica GT4, the 4wd one.

They used it because on the class they were racing you werent allowed more than 500bhp i think and they can get that without problem out of the 2ltr turbo engine which is a lot lighter than the supras 3ltr twin turbo.

Ahhh that makes sense then,

Aren’t you tempted to keep the 2JZ and tweak it to a healthy 1000bhp or so (or maybe more)?

It would look the part and have devastating performance to boot,

I guess you are coming from a purists point of view, I can respect that, with the 500bhp its still going to be like a ballistic missile.

hehe yeah, and will weigh less than a tonne.

Problem with a 1000bhp supra is its only any good in a straight line. lol

The real touring car is mind numbingly quick round corners as well as on the straights.

Fair point, I expect there is a compromise where you can regain most of the handling and have additional power to more than compensate.

If touring cars didnt have those engine regulations then I'm sure the 2JZ or something of that league (perhaps lighter since this is racing and money is no object) would be in use, without a doubt.

It would be nice to see a well sorted (good handling) high bhp supra and dispell the myth that all high power cars only go fast in straight lines!

Although 1000bhp might be too much for the track, but I expect there is a balance there somewhere,

anyway I'm sure it will be great! Are you planing on racing it then?

cheers,

L

Can't argue with that :)

i was thinking of buying a uk supra. i seen a lovely one. she was 720bhp. she was modded to the last nearly. she was an auto but i am sure you could convert that cant ya? and 720bhp haha plenty of power. she was 20grand stearling dow.

Of course, you can convert anything to anything with enough money. From what I gather though, an auto to manual conversion is quite expensive, possibly more than that big turbo kit cost to raise the bhp!

Out of interest, at 720 bhp I take it the auto box was modified, as I don't think they hang together too long at that level of bhp in standard form, the manual probably would hold up to it, providing you treated it with some respect of course,

cheers,

L

At 720bhp, either box would go bang as soon as you floor it.

Both boxes would probably be able to handle 600bhp for a short amount of time. But at 720, thats almost instant exploding gearbox territory

Have a read of this:

http://www.mkivsupra.co.uk/Technical/auto.htm

Looks like the auto can handle around 500bhp max, the manual around 550bhp (but I think thats possibly a touch conservative), I've read of people running the manual at higher bhp without trouble, 720 is probably pushing it a bit far though, for reliability it would really need strengthening. It's a bit like the engine, some people push a lot of bhp out of the standard block, but for reliability it should really be strengthened, depends if you are willing to take the chance on it I guess.

The 3SGTE engine is smaller as well as being lighter than the Supra tt lump. The smaller dimensions of the 3SGTE engine enables it to be mounted further back in the Supra's huge engine bay. This in turn greatly improves the weight distribution in the car, therefore improving the overall handling . This is one of the main reasons hardcore enthusiasts started using the 3SGTE engine. (as well as plenty of room for tuning)

Thanx for reading

Actually so far only TRD/Toms and Top secret have done this (as far as i can tell). If all goes to plan i'll be the third

Check my garage for pics ;)

I got the N/A as i was going to put a 3sgte in there to replace the 2jz. Thus made it a waste of time getting a turbo lump seeing as it was coming out.

Also on top of that the n/a's are lighter.

Obviously the tt is faster but having an n/a has really opened my eyes.

If i got another supra after this one i would probably get another n/a over a tt just for the way it drives. I just love it to bits :D

so as standard the nasps are not much over 1000 KG's?

why are they so much lighter?

With my celica import tescos happily insured it as a UK GT... i wonder if any company would do such a thing with these... hmm
