hi

i got a stereo 4 my mr2 a cd player i was just wondering would it b a straight fit in or will i have 2 buy fsacia n adaptors

as im only 16 just need a lil advice bout mr2s as im using it as a project 4 my mechanic career.

dont need anything no, just take the dash surround off around the stereo and then the stereo unscrews and comes out on the plate fastened underneath it, the stereo is connected to it by screws at the side.

Don't listen to the above posts unless you already have an aftermarket stereo in the car.

I fit stereos to cars for Halfords as a part time job and am my local branch's Jap "specialist"... I have done 15 plus MKII's including my own Rev3 a few years ago.

You will need to remove the centre console (stereo surround).

To do this remove the gear gator and ashtray and remove the screws you see working your way forward and up the centre console. Pull the console section towards you carefully unclipping it.

The screws holding the brackets attached to the head unit will be visible. Remove them and remove the brackets from the head unit. You will need to attatch these brackets to your new head unit using suitable self tapping screws (the screws supplied with the original head unit don't fit most aftermarket head unit.

If you have a fresh import with the double-din headunit, you will need a universal din pocket (with or without CD storage) available from Halfords or for near to the same money - the Toyota blanking panel from a main dealer.

You will also need an ISO harness adaptor also available from Halfords. Now depending on the age of the car as to whether it has the active sound system or not will depend on which Harness adaptor you get. Both cost the same. You could always buy both and return the one you don't use.

Plug/screw all back together and be happy B)

System~G - very useful info. I followed your instructions to remove the head unit and it was dead easy.

Found Halfords in Arnold, Notts very helpful - I'd asked at other places and they didn't know about difference between Active and Passive systems. And I wasn't sure what I had. But the guy at Halfords had fitted loads before and helped me find the right lead. Turns out I did need the Active one, though it was quite a bit more expensive than the regular lead.

I found that the active and passive harness leads were both the same price at my local Halfords, in the end i bought an active one online as it was a about £6 cheaper.

To be hounest i think ISO harnesses are really overpriced!!, £30 is daft, im a concert lighting designer by trade, and i also dabble in automotive electronics. A harness adapter costs me hardly anything to make.

the only reason i bought mine was because my time is thin at the moment.

Yes, the correct lead was about £30 and I think I had been quoted £13 on the phone for the other lead - the wrong one. Maybe I misheard, perhaps it was £30 for the wrong one too.

Anyway, I agree £30 seems steep - they must have a good margin on that; but I figured it would take me at least an hour & probably longer to make one, and time is too precious to waste on that.

if you have subs behind the seat/s then you have the active system and will have to Shell out £30 for the adaptor, if no subs then its a passive system and you can get the harness for about £10

if its an active system id recommend you buy the harness, might seem expensive but wiring without it is a right pain, ive had to rewire all my Speakers!

Yes i would second this if your not electricaly minded.

the Active system should have just one Sub behind the passenger seat. behind the drivers seat is a storage box.

must stress though if you have the active system and you by a harness, you will need a headunit that has RCA line outs, as this is what sends the signal to the amp, low pass and Speakers

Yes, good point Vince.

My head unit does have these.

Do you know if it's desirable for the head unit to have SUB out or not? I've not got the lead yet so I don't know if it has a seperate lead for the sub or whether it uses the left and right for the sub signal.

PS - just noticed your location Vince; Worksop. I'm not far from you - just south of Mansfield (Ravenshead). My dad use to live in Worksop, though he has recently moved across to Retford. I'll keep my eyes open for your motor though. Any pics?

NO the head unit doesnt need a sub out, the signal is carried from the RCA line outs to the cars built in amplifier and crossover, the crossover seperates the low and high frquences and sends them to the correct Speakers. If you were to send a low frequency to the crossover and amps, you wouldnt get any high, or mid coming from the system ;)

havent got any pics at the mo, but my car is just a standard white N/A, havent done anything to the car yet, but i have started on the inside.

Thanks Vince. The head unit I was fitting had 6 RCA outs - two marked low frequency, so I ignored those and connected up the other four.

Worked fine, and sounded good but I'm getting a very loud 'thunk' from the subs as soon as the ignition is turned on.

This happens even if the pre-outs aren't even connected up. It's so loud I couldn't live with it, and can't think what I can do to overcome it, other than strip out the active system and replace it all with a seperate amp.

I also discovered that the tape deck is stuffed in the head unit I was putting in, so I've gone back to the Toyota head unit for now. Thinking about getting a different one - Blaupunkt Woodstock 54 - but not going to bother unless I can overcome the thunk from the Speakers when the Toyota head unit isn't there.

Did you get anything like that when you replaced yours?

BTW mine is an active system, but has two subs - one behind each seat.

the sound thump is normal, try turning the volume down before switching the ignition off, and vise versa.

Also switch off your sterio before the ignition.

this is because of the gain on the amps, and power os stored wthin.

i wont go into detail as its complicated, and ive been on thw town :wacko:

mine is active, but only have one sub, as far as i know, will check it out now you have said you have two

2 subs is the premium setup, but its still an active system.
