Reverse

Right this has been annoying me for a while and i want to see if it happens to other people.

Sometimes when i go to put it in reverse the lever kind of sticks and refuse to go in gear, you can try to force it in but it wont work. The only way i can get it to work is to stick it in a few other gears first.

Is this just me?

Is it time for a trip to the big T wallet in hand?

this is normal. Reverse is not synched....and is the case for most cars.

Slipping her into second first does the trick..or rolling forward or back slighty.

Bit of both  ;)

Some Yaris gearboxes are a bit reluctant to change into reverse. #2 (japanese for you naysayers :P ) was particularly reluctant to change into reverse...

There are a couple of tricks:-

1. You cannot change from 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th straight to reverse - there's a lockout in case you try to do it at speed and shred the 'box. If you come to a stop in any of those gears you should wiggle the stick across the box a couple of times and the put it into reverse. After a while it becomes second nature...

2. If it still won't go into reverse then you have to put it in neutral, release the clutch, press the clutch and then pt it in reverse.

I've just sort of learnt to live with it to be honest

Hope that helps...

also if you give it a bit of gas as ur puttin it into reverse ive found it slips into reverse a little bit more easily, also with the clutch slightly dipped to biting point

Yes, quite normal though irritating, I'm afraid (the reverse selection, not Alan!).

I had it on my 1 litre P1 but no probs on my 1.3 P2 though I'm not sure that's significant or not. You do get used to it. It's the forward gears that you need to go in easily! :P

as few people have already said its common in alot of cars,

put it into 1st first should go in ok then.

Yeah as I realised at Brunters when everyone saw and heard me crunch my gears trying to get her in reverse.....

How embarassing!!

Still - thats the way to do it!

The T3 used to go into reverse without any hesitation, the Blue doesnt tho - always have to go into neutral and clutch up and then down again before she'll go in, otherwise there is a horrible crunch and when the gas is applied the revs shoot up but she goes no-where! It's second nature now tho.

Yeah I've got used to it, when it doesn’t go in to reverse the first time.

I just release the clutch, Put the stick back in to neutral, Wriggle (Not me the Gear Stick) :P , and then try again.

This always works

i first found this when i first got the car as id been driving a corsa ( learner car, not mine :P) previous with stupidly smooth gears, i found that putting it into netural then putting clutch down again and trying again usualy did the trick

Regarding the selection of reverse gear, it’s a Toyota design. It’s to stop you from accidentally selecting reverse when moving forward.

The correct procedure for getting reverse is to release the clutch for 2 seconds, reapply the clutch and then it will slide into reverse without any problems.

Hope this helps.
