Transmission, Gear Or Soemthing Else ?

I have Toyota Corolla 2000. I have been start up problem and I noticed that the gear doesn't go in the parking mode properly. When I push the gear little bit and try, the car used to get started. Now the worst situation.

It doesn't get started even I try to move the gear. I feel stiff break and tried everything to bring gear in proper parking position, but it does move properly or sometime moves loose.

Now, is it I should say transmission problem ? or Is it timing belt problem as someone in my office suggested.

How can I verify what exactly causing the startup problem.

Thank you.

I presume you have an 'auto' box.

What I think has happen is the gearshift linkage has ecome loose and thus is not actualy 'sitting' in the 'park mode' (although it looks like your lever has it's the linkage underneathe that hasn't!), in turn this is what will not let you start the car up (cause if it did it would in effect 'be in 'drive/gear' and that would be fatal).

As a first point of investigation prise up the 'gaiter/trim' from arround the bottom of the shift lever (it's only clipped to the centre consul) and see if any linkage has come loose (you can see the start of the linkage when you take the gaiter off).

Just a thought.
