New Avensis-noise On Take Off!

When it is cold and I drive my Avensis away, there is a noise similar to a rattle/football rattle sound coming from around the engine area.

It only happens when the car is cold, and on take off when the revs are low and I suspect the most vibration. As soon as the car changes up to 2nd, or the engine is warm the noise goes.

I suspect a rattling/vibrating cover of some sort, but the dealer couldn't find any problems. Any ideas or known areas/problems I could investigate.

I am 99% sure it is not mechanical!

Thanks

[Hi

I get the same problem when i rag the engine (Take it to its limit)

I think something needs tightening in the engine somewhere! try the big plastic thing on top of the engine. It may work

Good News

Noise is not any sort of problem.

If you look at the handbook, you will find that it refers to this noise as being the traction control engaging when first moving-off (I believe it happens as soon as you get to 1.8mph).

PS. The noise does not always happen, but this does not mean there is any sort of problem when it does.

My guess would be the hydraulic tappets rattling cos engine oil isn't warm and flowing round them properly yet, hence noise stops when engine is warmed up.

Just my 2 bobs worth!

Mine is Petrol 1.8 VVTi (6 months old) and does exactely the same thing. As it has traction control, I've been told at dealer that it is TRC engaging.

Yeah, had my new one for six weeks and was initially concerned at the crunching sound when pulling away -- when in gear only it seems as I also tried coasting to get rolling. I'm told it's normal, and it is a little less crunchy now than it was when I drove the car from the forecourt and thought I must have run over a dropped exhaust or something.

Perhaps the real test would be to have TRC OFF when pulling away.

Some of the strangest noises come from these new cars -- now my attention has wandered to the kettle-like rumblings my 2.0 litre makes below around 3000 rpm -- air con compressor, exhaust gas escaping from the manifold? Who's to say these days? It's new, guaranteed for three years and all that's left to me is to check the oil and trust in the technology (or is that hope for the best?)!

Don't mean to turn this thread, but as we have a couple of new Avensis owners here I'd like to mention that I've had colour coded protection strips fitted to the doors of my estate and it looks good (possibly better) and gives some peace of mind. Ask your dealer for details!

I think Runboy is referring to another noise then the one from the TRC test at startup.

I've experienced this noise too - it sometimes happens when accellerating with cold engine or driving with high load, e.g. a heavy trailer. Have also experienced it in hard acceleration on warm engine.

Pointed it out to the dealer, but they haven't heard of it before and couldn't provoke it at service, so no help there.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I'm searching for something...

When I "open up" the throttle on my D4D 2L (2005), I get what can best be described as a tick-tick-tick-tick noise that builds as revs climb. It appears to come from the upper-centre of the dash/engine bay. This is my first turbo diesel so it could be normal and I'll just look stoopid! ;)

The noise (usually) dies off when I change gears. I say usually because I sometimes change a bit quickly and I'm wondering if I'm not letting the turbo dump it's load properly... So to speak.

Cheers,

Jim

A couple of weeks ago I had the ECU replaced which cured the stalling auto issue (I hope!) and also the bearings in the 'drive' belt (alternator etc) and this cured the noise I was getting at around 1200rpm.

Cannot say I have heard any noises on pulling away. I have traction control. Still sounds to me like something is lose in the engine compartment.

Hello, I have just bought a 98 2.0 GLS. I am experiencing the same problem, when I move off on 1-st gear, just when I step off the clutch pedal, there is a metallic noise or a rattle (dunno how best to describe it!) from under the engine (sounded as if from in front of the passenger side). The noise comes only on moving off on 1-st and does not come on any other occasion! Any advice would be very helpful. Did runboy manage to bottom this out?

That noise will be a worn thrust bearing on the clutch. I have the same noise on my Carina E. It only seems to happen when cold and only when I 'push the revs' slightly. If I am very slow and let the car begin to roll before fully releasing the clutch there is no noise.

There is no real problem with this type of fault. I mean it wont get any worse! The labour involved to replace the thrust bearing is roughly equivalent to replacing the clutch. If you car has done a high mileage (well over 100K) you may want to consider replacing the clutch at the same time. otherwise just leave it.

There is no traction control on the 98 model as far as I am aware?

Hmm

I get a kinda cluncking noise on my 54 reg t4 avensis, now this does happen if you just turn the key to the on possition, or if you start the car and first drive off, I have been tempted to talk to the dealer ship when I take it in to get the wheel bolts replaced as they are all rusty  ( I dont believe that such a modern car would have rusting wheel nuts...thougth they might have sorted this problem out!)

Gazza, thanks a ton. I have just purchased the car (although 98 model just 38000 miles onthe clock) so I guess the clutch need not be replaced now and I can live this noise.

I would like to add that people like you make this forum really really fab, I have been a member for only a day and I am very impressed, the amount of information (although mostly too technical for me) is mindboggling. Thanks again.
