Ive just recently noticed the amount of miles my car does and was wondering if it was meant to be like that. the car is a 1.8gls 98 model. i seem to be getting around 50 miles for a tenner!! dunno how to convert that into gallons!! lol. and that about when the price is 85.9 a litre. i never have the air con on either.

Neone no if thats right or not?

You aught to get more than 50 miles from £10. Since it's hot this weekend, ensure you use your A/C rather than driving round with the windows open as A/C uses less fuel than the drag caused by having windows down.

BTW - I've got a 98 2.0 GLS auto and got 396 miles for £43 last time which works out at 36.4MPG.

That works out at 19.5mpg. Either you've got your figures wrong, or your car spends all of its life idling in traffic as the engne should not produce figures as low as that. Toyota say the 1.8 lean-burn should average 39 mpg - mine gives over 40mpg on my commute.

Also, make sure the cambelt has been changed, it is almost due at 60K.

My 02 VVTI 1.8 Estate does on average 38 mpg just running around with a/c on most times. Is yours an accurate assesment or are you going on computer calculation which I find is somewhat dodgy to say the least !

NOw uve got me scared. So that means theres definently sumthing wrong!! lol the car does stay idling sumtimes when parked but not for long periods of time so i dont think that should make that much of a difference. The figures must be right becoz whenever i put some petrol in i reset the electronic milege counter in the dash. For example when ive put £20 petrol in the max amount of miles it usually displays is 100/110!! So how do i check if the cambelt has been replaced? and if it is that how much on average it gnna cost me? Could it be anything else?

Thanx

To change litres to gallons... divide by 4.5. Example: 32 litres divided by 4.5

= 7.11 galls divide by 4.546. Example: 32 litres divided by 4.546 = 7.039 galls.

Just to state the obvious, the best method ofworking out average mpg is:

1. fill tank to brim(make sure it is two clicks to finish)

2. zero trip meter

3. drive at least a 100 miles( or whatever , so long as its more, to get a good mix of driving conditions)

4. take mileage covered and then how many litres it takes to fill it back up(two clicks)

5. use the calculation from litres to gallons(not U.S).(I use an online calculator.)

6. divide gallons used into mileage. <_<

Hey Presto!, a reasonably accurate m.p.g. reading. :D

Hope this helps. My 1.8 vvti auto hatch does on average 35-38 around town and over 45 on a run (ALL WITH AIRCON ON!)

Cheers,

Nick..........

I'd have to agree with the last post.

If you are just putting a tenner in when the tak is nearly empty and then judging it by the position of the fuel tank needle, then this is a very inaccurate way of working out your MPG.

The only true way, as stated, is to brim the tank and then refill to the same level afterwards.

You might be surprised that your MPG doubles !

Cheers

Andrew

Sorry folks...that should have read divide by 4.546 not 4.5.
