It maight have one of two following problems:

1) When you turn the key, you say dashboard lights are on, but when you try to start nothing happens. So, when you try to start do lights loose their brightness, I mean like they are starting to switch off???? If they do, it's charge problem. You probably have old Battery or it's alternator problem. It's easy to confirm: Start the engine (on cold, as you say it's only possible way) and let it run. Disconnect "+" cable from the Battery. If engine shuts off it's dead alternator, I mean no charging at all. If engine keeps on running, it's old Battery and you need the new one.

2) Starter might get stucked. When heppens that you can't start hit the starter with the hammer (not too much) once and try again. If it doesn't help try again. After 5-6 times trying with no luck it's not the starter (probably)!

Compression problem in cilinders is notable only if starter rolls on hot but engine doesn't start. I guess it's not your case. If nothing above helps, try (when you can't start by turning the key) to switch ignition on and start the engine going downhill with your car. If it starts it's definettly one of the problems above.

Then post me your experience

I have got the same symptoms (leave the car parked in the sun for any length of time and it will not start). I am curious - just what was the heat doing to the ignition switch that caused it not to work?

Thanks,

Paul

Just adding my comments if anybody happens to have the same problem....

Over the last few months the car used to start alright but in last few weeks, I noticed that the problem became quite intermittent though it wasn't that hot outside. Generally speaking whenver I tried starting, sometimes it would start straightaway and sometimes it wouldn't. It always started in maximum 5-6 attempts.

Went to the Toyota garage and they seemed to know the problem straightaway. Either its a common problem or they have been reading this thread :) They changed the ignition switch and the car is not having any trouble since then.

Cost : £118 inclusive of VAT and Labour.

It's caused by condensation...... check your leads, etc for damp inside them, spray them with WD40 and wipe them clean.....

Had this with my previous car and it was condensation inside the distributer cap.
