Hi im new to this website and ive got a couple of questions to ask regarding toyota starlet turbo's.

ive got a honda civic 1.5lsi at the moment done a few mods to it, cold air induction, 4-2-1 exhaust mani and decated it. So its around 110hp.

Im now looking for something quicker and which i can take down santa pod so heres my questions,

1- Can you put the power to the ground or do they suffer with traction problems like civics?

2- can you get hold of performance parts easily in the uk ie forged pistons, rods and crank?

3- what bhp can you run on stock internals and aftermarket internals?

4- are they reliable and can they handle bein taken down the strip a few times?

one last thing are they as quick as a civic 1.6 vti?

cheerz ash

1. yes, upto a point

2. yes

3. i believe around 180 - 190hp is fine on stock internals (someone had a stock internal 4efe to 204.6whp), but by then the standard turbo will need to be replace as its quite asthmatic, and itd be better to upgraded the internals anyway

4. yes, its a toyota B) and im not too sure about the strip, unless you're running huge power, i dont see why not

5. i believe the gt just beats it

cheerz fella.

ive seen some on autotrader for £2500 - £3000 is that a good price to pay for one?

1. any fwd car will be crap off the start line. the starlet/gt/glanza is no exception.

2. fairly easy but most decent parts need to be got from australia/ japan.

3. 160bhp stock. if you are running much more than 170bhp I would expect the creep life of the block/pistons/bearings etc to erode rather quickly.

4. if you are going to a drag strip, make sure you uprate the internals.

5. Civic is quicker because it has a more aerodynamic body and more power 185bhp i believe. Its also not much heavier.

try and get a glanza over the ep82, the car is newer and should be less of a headache as metal deteriorates with age.

the vti is 160bhp ;) aint to worried about litle bits of bodywork as can get them done cheap.

cant afford a glanza as im an apprentice mechanic and dont get the best wadges lol.

cheerz anyway, by the way must say how friendly the people are on this forum :)

well officially the 0-60 time of the vti is 7.8 vs. 7.2 for the gt

so in theory the gt should be quicker :D

is there anything you have to look out for when buying a starlet turbo then, are they prone to anything?

C.V. joints are pretty common other than than that just the usualthings you would check with a turbo car.

If you are wanting to run down pod alot and can bare the wait and sometimes risk bring an already modified one in from Japan.

im not looking to run it down the pod every week just like once in a while, want a fun daily car to drive with tuning potential.

Yeah thats pretty much what you would get from a starlet and there is no real need to do the internals if you wanted 200 to possibily 250hp.

Bumped into a guy whom say he has only uprated the fuel pump, head gasket and ball baring turbo and has 306bhp

Which I'd say would go up the stip inlow 13's and high 12's!

There is one on a few month old fast car free DVD saw at mates house that goes up it 10.98 sec's being a highly modded Skyline GTR, span like a bugger but once second gear went in it's like it go shot out of a gun! Was a EP91 model!

So I say unless your gona supercharge or turbo your civic 1.6 V-tec or type-R lumps (this would mean changing your curent engine!) get a starlet Turbo!

Hope helps

306bhp - Ask for proof...

Dave Burwash has a dyno tested 311bhp and he'll be really upset to find out that all those thousands he's spent on his engine just get him an extra 5bhp.

thanx for the info every one put me civic up for sale then hoping to get a starlet turbo :D

I dont want to stir any **** here but ive just got bought a mk3 CRX vti. And a couple of weeks ago i was at york dragway i came up against a starlet gt , there was nothin init off the line but then i started to pull away.

more horsepower = greater top end pull, plus its slightly more aerodynamic

I don't want to pee on anyone's fire but this really is not good advice. If you want the engine to last ( with 200+hp) then you NEED to do the internals.

And here's why:

1. Engine Power is developed by burning the fuel in a controlled manner. If you require more engine power without increasing the physical dimensions of the engine you HAVE TO RUN HOTTER.

2. Metal expands when it gets hot, this is called thermal stress and is caused by metal wanting to expand but it being constrained this causes increased stress on parts such as con rods, bearings etc. These parts are unlikely to fail straight away but the increased thermal and mechanical stress leads to premature failure through creep fatigue. eg if you get a piece of metal and bend it several times eventually it snaps but hardly ever on the first time its bent.

3. Because heat is a waste product of combustion you need to get rid of it. You will probably need either a bigger radiator or a more powerful water pump

as for the power output of the engine. as riko said the greater the power the more the top end pull, this is because at high speeds (above 40mph) the aerodynamics are in excess of 33% of the drag on the car, the weight of the car contributes about 3% of the drag but this is dependent on the tyres and their width.

I am confused  classhash asked weather the starlet is quicker than a VTI civic all iam sayin is in my experience the VTi tends to be quicker overall.
