Just about to buy a 2001 Avensis 1.8vvti GS and I have doubts about the saleman's answers to:

Does it have a timing belt or chain? If a belt, what is the renewal mileage? Answer: doesn't have either, it's vvt.

Can "beam benders" or some equivalent be fitted (for driving on the Continent) or do the headlamps need to be aligned by the franchise? And re-aligned on return to the UK? Answer: Beam benders ar OK.

Is there a market in second hand SatNav cds? Answer: Doh! Not unreasonably, they want to sell new ones, but buying new for a month of European travel doesn't seem like a bargain.

The salesman was almost right, I believe the vvti engine has a small timing chain, but the cam gears actually mesh together.

The best option when driving abroad is "beam benders".

Not aware of any demand for second hand sat nav cd's as the old version you would be buying would be just the same as the one in your system? For European discs I would think people would keep it for their next trip?

Yes, definately have it! If there is a cam chain/belt to be replaced it will say in the service guide. Have had the old 1.8 now for 30,000 miles and I love it. They haven't got the best interior fit and finish but the car in general is brilliant all over. And soooo cheap to run. I haven't had one thing go wrong with mine, all I need do is have it serviced. Simple!!
