Avensis Gearbox

Hi all,

I'm in the process of buying an Avensis 1.6 (1999-2000). I have heard some rumblings that there are some known problems with gearbox's on some Avensi. Does anyone have any definitive proof of this, or is it poppycock?

Or does anyone have anything to say about this. :help:

Thanks in advance.

It is one of a few weak points on the old Avensis thought most are fine, however a friend of mine who has a fleet of 7 Avensis has got through about 4 gearboxes, the automatic gearboxes appear to be more reliable,

I wouldn't concern yourself too much about it though.

Thanks for the reply james. I think I'll chance it.

Well my gearbox and clutch both failed within 60,000 miles.

What a terrible car this has been for me.

I bought a 1.8 Avensis on an S plate a couple of years ago after my Vectra gearbox went belly up at 78,000. After 25,000 miles of motoring and 56,000, the Avensis gearbox developed a fault on the output shaft bearing last July. Cost was less that the £650 quoted by local specialist as we have good local mechanic.

Everyone said I was nuts to think it was the gearbox as Toyota's do not have those sort of problems. Eventually a Toyota service manager admitted that they do. A local gearbox specialist has several on the shelf as he is always repairing them for taxi drivers. It seems that the problem stems from duff bearings - the gears are fine.

I bought the car because my son-in-law and his family have had Toyota's for years without any problems. Now my daughter's Avensis (1.8 on a Y plate with a vvt-i engine that gobbles oil) has developed the same gearbox problem at 49,200 miles.

The problem sounds like mother's old mangle cogging round until it had a bucket of soapy water over it.

I still like the Avensis and even with the gearbox problem it has been cheaper to run than the Vectra as it hasn't had to have sensors replaced every few weeks at a cost of £200. That one also managed to break a front spring, the exhaust manifold cracked and the radio and clock display went west as well. It also use much more juice.

Weren't these Toyota's made in Britain??

:) I had a gearbox rumble on my 02 plate Avensis with 70K on the clock. Repaired under the Toyota Extended warranty. Parts cost £20 (one bearing and seal), total bill £650, glad I was not paying.

I have a S reg Avensis 1.8 taxi that has done 250'000 miles the only problem i have had with this car (apart from general wear and tear) has been the shaft in the g/box .A local g/box company repaired it for 250 quid so i was happy.

This car has gone through some right stick but it was been unbelievably reliable, a taxi drivers dream!

I would love another Avensis something like a 05 plate d4d t-spirit however i have heard some bad reports re the newer models and this is concerning me a little and causing me to lean towards the V.W Passat, but in all honesty i would love a new Avensis again.
