Has anyone any suggestions as what could be the problem with my car. Whilst driving i lost power and the car came to a standstill. The car will turn over and run for 3 or 4 seconds but then it dies.

Hi - as the engine still runs (albeit very briefly!) hopefully you can rule out timing belt failure or massive overheat.

At a guess (and I'm no mechanic!!!) this could be an ECU failure (engine management computer chips). One for the garage (or one of the good mechanical people on the forum - they're very good and helpful).

Fuel starvation...get your fuel filter and fuel pump checked.

an after thought...was it misfiring at all? Could be an Air mass meter issue , possibly loose connector or at worst a failure on the meter. Located under the bonnet by the Battery. Check the connection first.
