Oil Guzzler

:D Hi people,

My Gen 6 celica, 1.8st has a pretty low mileage, its on about 92'000 on a 'n' plate.

my problem is that the car seems to be drinking quite a bit of oil and i have spoke to lots of mechanics and getting different answers. so i thought i would ask everyone here to see if anyone has any ideas on how to go about the cheapest way of finding the problem.

When i start the car in the morning there is no blue smoke, i even took the cat out of the exsaust system to see if that was stopping blue emissions but it has had no effect. i really cannot see any visable burning of oil at any time car is running.

as for leaks i can't locate any of them either. Everyone i have spoke to has told me its either valve stem oil seals or piston rings but surely that would show blue smoke or bad performance and that is not happening.

Could it be some sort of tuning problem?? I did a complete engine flush and oil change plus new filter, which it really didn't need as the old one looked fairly new! it seems to be going down still. Its dropping about 1cm on the dipstick every 200miles (ish)

any ideas people, i would much appreiciate it

thanx!

Get someone to follow you, if its valve stem seals then it'll only smoke whilst changing gear at highish revs..

Hello and welcome to the club

You can join my own special club! I have the same engine and the same problem, check out these posts:

I have checked loads of stuff with mine, I have found that thicker oil lasts longer but if you read the second post (which is current) you will see that Carlos thinks that is a bad idea!

My car does not smoke at all and I have been told that the cat absorbs anything so it won't but the cat won't last as long

I have done a compression test - which is fine. I think the next test I will have done is a leak down test.

The basic advice is keep it topped up. I just fill mine every time I fill up the petrol

It would be great to hear of anything you find out though

silly question i know but have you checked the spark plugs.

if it's burning oil one of your spark plugs will be coated and so you know which chamber (if any) you have a problem with.

yeah, we are having another discussion, nothing gospel mind you and who knows what the final outcome will be - but at least we are all putting our experiences to it and having a good natter, check out the other thread, i've got some more to add and i need to catch up read whats been written too....

1cm on a dipstick is about 1 litre of oil. something sounds realy bad mate and i dont know if discussing oil grades will help...

see you on the other thread...

Didn't you have another engine put in last year?? Did you have this issue with your old engine as well?

Yep I had an engine transplant end of last year, this was because I didnt fill her up with oil and the bottom end went :crybaby::crybaby: nooooo oil and engine goes kaboom :( and I dont know if my old one was drinking oil exsessivly coz I failed to fill it it up regular basis.

And I have sooooooooo learnt my lesson, lol My Boyfriend bought me a plastic model engine that I (with help) had to construct just so I could get my head around the way an engine works, and now I understand the ways of an engine (just) :group-cuddles:

So now I always keep a few litres of semi synthetic 10/40 in the car with me.

perhaps you could explain it to me then :P

i would expect about 1 litre per 1000 miles on semi synth, possibly up to 2000 miles on a fully synth.

the engine has a range of thermal efficiency and in the winter you can push the engine more, whilst in the summer it will bog down and lose a bit of power because of heat soak, so realy the oil consumption can be the same winter and summer, just keep you eye out for any big changes, especially if your drinking the oil.

I remember asha when your engine went, I was proud for you being able to admit it.

tis a bit embarressing i know - but your cruising now with a grin..

Seems to be a common theme here. My GT4 uses about 500mls/1000 miles, Thats using Mobil 1 5w/50 but i suspect half that is coming out of the rocker gasket  . Got a new one now though so we shall see.

double checked my oil consumption and its more like 800mpp,when the oil is new it hardly uses any but after about a 1000 miles starts to drop on dipstick,im using castol high milage stuff.

Just thought i would add my oilage use its far more than expected i have to constantly top mine up only had the car 4 weeks now and nearly used a gallon of oil already so something cant be right like the others no leaks no smoke just dont know where its going.

Car is a gen 5 93 with 120,000 miles will take it to a garage and see if anything can be found i'll also get it tuned and see what happens.

If it cant be fixed i'll sell it and start looking for another celica.

I'm guessing the garage won't find anything wrong :D The official answer I have from both Toyota and my local friendly mechanic is:

It just uses it don't worry about it - keep it topped up!

The 3s family of engines do use a bit of oil. It was designed a a racing engine, not really for road use, and as such oil control was not a primary concern, but performance was. Also, the 3s engine bottom end has to be nearly a 30 year old design now. Things have moved on so far from those days.

Typically you should be aiming for around 1000-1500 miles per pint. Under 500, and you have a problem. Don't know what oil you're using but a better quality one should be burnt off a bit slower.

Thank you all!

this has calmed my nerves a bit knowing the problem isn't just happening to my little baby. it does sound like a common problem for celicas.

Before i bought my car it was sitting around for a while and it could be that some seals within the engine have dried out and shrunk a little??? i have put some seal rejuvenater into the oil in hope that it may help the problem. will let you all know in about a thousand miles or so to see if the problem gets a little better.

fingers crossed :D

thanx again all for your replies.

See you all around
