Hi all

Just bought my 1st celica and i love it apart from 1 thing i'll tell you what it is 1st of all.

I have a Toyota Celica GT-R 2.0 16v twincam its on a 93 plate.

The problem is its a jap import and the fastest it will go is 110mph i have heard that imports are restricted.

The speedo clock goes up to 115mph thats all but it reads in mph is there a way i could make the car faster I,E take away the restrictions.

Getting a bit peed off when my m8 can overtake me in his citreon picasso 2.0 diesel.

The good thing about my car is that i swapped it for my rover 220 diesel lol and ive never looked back.

Just that little problem needs sorting.

Also the elec aerial isnt working its stuck on the down possistion but that dosnt bother me as the radio still works fine.

Any help would be great many thanks

Hi yes i do know the speed limit is 70mph thats why i do them speeds at a old airfield near where i live to test the car out.

The speedo reads in mph but only shows 115 mph im sure the car is restricted as its a jap import.

Are u 100% sure its limited? Clocks set to a maximum of 115MPH arent very good? have u got the old KPH dials still? If you did u can delimit it for less..

i.e. if u use the standard KPH dials and purchase a coverter which reduces the amount the needle moves enough to that it shows u a MPH reading on a KPH dials. Ur max speed limit basically moves up to something like 150MPH ++ if you do that.

Just get a sticker that says MPH to cover up the KPH writing on the dials

Get the de-restricter as suggested, I used to have the same on the Mr2, as for the dials would leave them in palce as they'll stay accurate, if the speedo gets up to 110 and you go over it doesn't really matter what speed your doing as if you get caught its a ban anyway :D

PLus its a nice fellnig watchnig the needle just sit on the pinat the end of the clock.

Hi Cookci

Sorry i dont have the kmh dials the car came with the dials that are already on i will try and have a look for some dials for kmh im 99% sure its limited as i was going 110mph my m8 passed me laughing lol in his picasso didnt fly past me but still went passed was well peeved.

I was a laughing stock at the airfield wont be going back till ive sorted this out lol

Thanks for your help will try a few things now

Hi M8

Will get the restricter ive sourced one near where i live for £50 not fitted hope it comes with instructions yeah good idea about the clocks not bothered after 110mph anyway just hope its still accurate on public roads at 70mph the good thing aswell my car dosnt have a pin at the end of the speedo so hopefully should keep going lol well passed the 110mph mark

Thanks for your help aswell

Cant wait to get back to that airfield now and show the little hatches how its done lol.

my jdm is still restricted and i'm not for derestircting them.

this is why;

My car was built in 1991, its done 135K on the chassis, engine mileage is not inportant, but its half that again.

My chassis is so tight, lovely and tight, no awkward flexing or roll on the bends, and yes I have full time AWD and a bit of chassis strengthening but a 4x4 can twist and flex a lot. Ive been in UK st185's and they dont feel as rigid, they dont feel as tight.

I put that down to one thing, being driven at high speed has put stress under high forces on the chassis. of course this is open to debate, but its just common sense and logical to assume if a car has never been over 112mph, which all jap cars were governed to, then it hasnt had the high speed forces to contend with.

All cars that are driven at high speeds, like 2nd hand reps cars, are full of rattle and flex and are not as structuraly sound, so that dictates that a restricted car will be better.

As there's no way to test it on the roads as its highly illegal and dangerous to drive at those speeds unless in a professional environement like a track or runway with an ambulance on hand, so why bother. I know my car will get up to about 150mph but have no intention to do that kind of speed.

I've been at 145 mph in a big heavy 6 cylinder rwd saloon car, and it went like a dream as it was a merc, it felt like no miles at all and it was in a safe environment, but even in that car if i had have lost a tyre at that speed i would have had a 50/50 chance of living if the car decided to flip and roll.

a crash like that on the motorway with 1400KG hunks of iron and steel to contend with, big articulated lory's, lamp posts, barriers etc then of course your just pushing up the daisies for a bit of thrill. just to beat a Saxo  but yeah, i know ou said u were on an airfield...

being aware of your own mortality can be a buzz. but high speeds in a straight line just dont turn me on, i like having to turn the wheel and use the gears. a mop can be tied to the accelerator and i could steer with rope from the back seat and do max speed in an auto matic, so it aint exactly driving skill either.

so i dont derestrict for that reason, and to keep the chassis nice and tight as these cars are becoming modern classics, i want it to stay in good nick.

you can get uk clock up to 180 or whatever and get a speedo converter, but if i were you i'd leave it restricted.

but hey - its your car. by the way, it should do about 135-140mph on 101ron fuel i.e. optimax with millers fuel additive. so just show him the psec and laugh.

but i can understand if your ecited with the high revving 3sge lump after riding a down and torquey diesel, but you'll get over revving the fubar out of it when you get the fuel bills and realise your cooking the oil...

Hi m8

You have a good point there my car is in great condition apart from 1 scratch and a few stone chips here and there it handles like a dream a totally different class from my old rover but i would only be going at them speeds maybe once or twice a year.

I might do as you sugessted and leave it alone at least i know i have a better car than a saxo and the saxo drivers probably think the same aswell.

Yep i now have the car i have dreamt about for so long and your right why spoil a good thing.

Cheers for your input.
