Air Con

Despite weather being very hot in UK at the moment (very unusual), I'm reluctant to use the air-con as people have told me it you lose alot of MPG.

What sort of losses can I expect - town driving, little motorway.

eg. 2 mpg, 5 mpg ? What are your experiences ?

My last company car I used air con through summer as required, and kept a running total monthly of fuel consumption and to be honest I never noticed any difference. If its hot, use it and don't worry about it

I have quite literally just stopped using aircon in my 1.8 T2.

Since buying the car in October 04 I have achieved an average mpg (if the trip computer is accurate) of circa 34mpg.

Since last filling the car up with petrol and not using the air con, I am now averaging 43mpg.

Huge difference!

Mine is on all the time on the 1.8 vvti auto!

I still return 35mpg around town and 40-45 mpg on a run. The only thing it affects a little, is acceleration with the auto box. Its not as responsive to hard pedal push as it is with it off.

I use mine all year round as it stops steaming up inside and first thing in the morning switch to hot with aircon on and virtually instant demisting.

Don't forget to use it for at least 10 mins a week to keep gas circulating and the seals lubricatied, but most of all to stop bacteria build up on the condeser which STINKS!

Hope this helps,

Nick........

Trip computer is not that accurate, I run a spreadsheet giving me very accurate figures, and for the first month, my T3-X was averaging 40-45mpg although the trip computer rarely dropped lower than 50! I was waaaay pleased until In input the data onto my spreadsheet

It makes very little difference especially on bigger cars. You'll actually use more fuel by having windows and sunroofs open as the amount of drag they create is huge, a test was performed a while ago in a magazine, they found around a 5% difference when using A/C but between 20 and 30% when having the windows open.

Sorry I didn't read the post properly  . I belong to D.N.A. (national dyslexia association) and worship santa.

Same with mine, as I did more miles so the consumption improved even with aircon on all the time.

Cheers,

Nick.........

Ok i never have my A/C off as i am one of these people that loves the cold. But if you think about it as you are not using your A/C you will get a bit more mpg but lose your gas and have to get it regassed and will get a buld up of fungal spor's in your pipes and have to get them cleaned out. S don't melt this summer USE IT

re mpg about 5 % inncrese on 3 cars toyota mercedes and audi

also needs to be switched on to lube the seals and also stop bacteria growing you will not see the bacteria but more sore throats etc

you only live once so air con on

less stress when driving

5% sounds about it from my experience also. With the air con on full after starting up on a warm day it seems to add around 200 - 300rpm to the normal idle of between 600 - 800rpm.

My air con is on all year round.....when travelling 64 miles a day for 5 or 6 days from a full tank I would get over 400miles.
