Hand Brake

I've just gone to a dealer complaining about handbrake in my Avensis 2005. It brakes fully only at 12th click. First, as usual, and as car is in warranty, response was "It's normal", like I don't know anything about cars. As I was insisting that it should fully brake at arround 6th click, he went to get "Service Manual" and there it was: "Full breaking of Handbrake should be between 6th and 9th click". Mine breakes on 12th, but I'm not sure that it brakes fully just because 12th click is the top of movement, it's limit, handbrake doesn't go up any furhter. Still, it's not covered by warranty, dealer said. It's because "adjustments" (headlights, handbrake etc.) are not treated as factory fault. So, can anyone tell me how to adjust it by myself. Before Avensis I have had a VW Golf and did adjustment just below the handbrake, from inside the car. Where is it on Avensis? Is it inside the car in central console or it's by the rear wheels? I can do it by myself and avoid paying such a simple adjustment.

Thanks for any help

I've spoke to a few Avensis owners, and this seems to be commonplace, mine is only 1 month old, and its on the 7th click already. Maybe styling makes it look worse, cos when handbrake is on (7 clicks) its nearly vertical, whcih I hate. Personally I was gonna get mechanic to do it at first service (which is coming up fast), but if someone knows how to do it I might have a go myself :ffs:

If your handbrake locks the wheels on the 12th click - then it is outside the 6-9 clicks stated by Toyota and should be adjusted Under Warranty.

If you have disks and pads on the rear, then the travel is normally longer on the handbrake than a vehicle fitted with drums and shoes.

Take your car back and tell them "it started to roll away when parked on a hill" - they will soon adjust it !!!
