03 T Sport Questions

T Sport 1978

Hi all,

OK... My sample is reg on DEC03 and i dont seem to be getting any of the rattles or light dimming problems that i have read elsewhere. Fingers crossed i will be ok with mine... But seriously, it would be good to know of what to look out for? If anyone could shed some light on possible problems it would be appreciated.

For example, i read that T Sport needs and should have oil change every 5000 miles rather that the 10000, how true would you guys say this is?

Also, if you are in the "lift" alot does this consume oil and meaning that you need to top up?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Hi there. I've got a Celica TS, but have heard of some of the things that can be probs on Corolla TS's.

- dash dimming or entire display can go together with engine management system;

- some pull to the right either under braking or on a flat road w/o camber;

- lift bolts can shear or wear on earlier VVTL-i engines, although this seems to have been partially solved (the jury's out and I don't want to open another can of worms on this debate - there are loads of threads out there to read on this subject :bookworm: ) I guess just make sure the lift is functioning properly (i.e. still giving a good kick). If you want to be on the safe side, part with £50 every so often and the Toyota boys will have a look and replace the lift bolts for you.

As for the oil, I'm not sure about that.......nope not anyway, as I haven't had mine changed for 7k!!! :lol:

Apart from that, I don't think there's too much else.

Enjoy your motor. :thumbsup:

This engine sips oil, and that seems to be true if you have a Corolla, Celica or Elise/Exige. If you find it's drinking a lot, then something serious is probably afoot.

Not sure about changing every 5000. I've kept to my service intervals, but it's only done 26k and had three oil changes so a bit too early to say how it's going to be later on in life.

Regarding the dodgy lift bolts, it seems to have been mainly a problem on the earlier engines which mostly found their way into Celicas, but some people on the forum have recommended checking and changing on newer CTS engines.

Paul.

Thanks for the advice mate. Apart from the mentioned stuff, it should be sweet?

i am concerned that due to the whole LIFT mechanism being driven by hydralics, that it may excessively consume oil in the process...

I use my lift as often as I can (at least several times day ahem road conditions permitting officer honest ;) )

My t-s uses very little to no oil between the weekly check. Mine has around 12.5 k on the clock I've done approx 4k since I got mine just under 6 months ago and I haven't had to put any in yet

There isn't a whole lot of oil sloshing around the place. Look at this diagram.

There is a small channel in the valve mechanism which is filled with oil and ends in a sliding pin. When the hydraulic pressure increases sufficiently to overcome the force of the spring holding the pin back, it slides a few mm to lock the rocker in place so that the larger cam acts on the valves. Doesn't require any volume of fluid to do this.

I cant help myself sometimes too...and just for the hell of it. :D

I will be going back for my 600 miles service within the week as i am still driving it just for fun at the moment. And its all because of THE LIFT.

As for the oil... Its good to know that the engine can take the load and not so much as sweat from it.

Keep enjoying your TS!

At the end of the day - that's what it's there for and the engine was almost "built around" it!! No need to worry!! :thumbsup:

Well, my experience is that if you drive the car hard, it will drink a little more oil.

Pretty good to think that this engine is so well engineered that it doesn't?

Anywyay... I havent got over the excitement yet...dont know if i ever will. :P
