Spongy Sound

Recently the rear end has started to sound spongy when going over big ish bumps such as speed bumps, even at low speed. When you push the rear end down by hand it sounds the same, but goes down, up, stop like it should. Any idea what this could be. :bookworm:

After a short, highly scientific experiment, I conclude that a spongy sound is a kind of squishy squelching sound. You may need water and soap to reproduce these results.

I was going to post very similar when I first read it, but then thought better

Can you let us know exactly what type of noise it is, the only type of noise I can think of is a sort of air in fluid type noise??

Failing that have you got a big sponge in the boot??

I wish it was a big sponge in the boot. Its kind of a creaking noise. Im taking it to the garage tonight for my dad to have a look at it, so fingers crossed it aint bad.

Hope thats any better, any sugestions of what to look for will be great. It does sound like its coming from behind the rear drivers side wheel.

Also as of yesturday it is not starting well. Normally it would goto around 1800 revs when cold. But only goes to around 1100 and stuters when i accelerate abit, ok once at 2k. Sounds like going onto 3 cylinders. Its fine once warm. Any ideas.

Sounds like electrics on the starting side of things.

Check the spark plugs, leads and dizzy. Make sure there is no water in the spark plug holes, you could try spraying some damp start stuff over the leads - you could also take the car some dark at night (I mean really dark - in the middle of nowhere) and get someone to rev the engine whilst you look under the bonnet for sparks flying between leads.

Does it struggle more when going up hills?? (or under load?)

I could be wrong about the above but it's just an idea - everytime I have had it like that though it does it all the time even when warm so it might not be the same?????

Sounds like a bush, a shock or a spring at the back.

its fine up hills once warm, and really if you get the revs up, its just between 1-2k until warm. Might be the damp as it started yesturday and did it this morning when it had been wet all day. But yesturday morning it was fine, just when i finished work it started.

noise sounds like a weak rear suspension strut , if you can gain access to the struts spray some wd40 on the silver part of the shocker , as for running badly , spray the cap and maybe time to check the plugs are all ok.

I suspect it's related to the idle control valve in some way. It might just need cleaning out, or it could be a loose connector.

My dad had a look, it seems to be one of the bush's on the four arms, but apparently they look like they are in good nick, but just sound sqeaky. Covered the whole lot in WD40, fingers crossed.

Any suggestions, plus how much is it for new bush's.

Also started up after work today, when it had been dry outside for a few hours, it started fine, prob still need to check the leads and plugs though.

Pay particular attention to the king lead from the coil. Tends to corrode quite nicely if left to it`s own devices.

PS. Mke sure you got a spare handy. Mine fell apart as soon as i touched it.
