Bad Catalytic Converter

My 2001 Corolla has a Bad Catalytic Converter and it causes the Check Engine Lighto stay on permanently. I plan to fix it later. In the meantime, how do I get the check engine light to go off so I can be alerted when something other than the catalytic converter is wrong?
