4 Branch Manufold/k&n Filter

just a quick question. I've got a 1987 carina GT-R and it has the 3s-ge engine in, the 1st generation i believe. I've noticed it has a normal manufold on, as oposed to later generation 3s-ge's that have a nice 4 branch. I presume its quite easy to change the manufold over.

Also, how do you go about putting a K&N filter on it, with regards to the big sensor unit on the intake pipe etc.

thank you.

obviously, it has 4 cylinders. Perhaps i should rephrase it. Mine has a 1 piece cast iron manufold, as oposed to the much nicer 4 branch tubulour manufolds the later models have.

Rev 2 and 3 engines (gen 5 celica onwards) have a 4-2-1 tubular manifold as standard. Not 100% sure that the rev 1 exhaust ports will match up with the tubular manifold though.

For the intake, just use an aftermarket panel filter in the standard airbox.

but the standard panel filter best suites gen 5 - gen 4 had AFM and doesnt mind the cone filters...

what do you mean by tubular manifolds?

sorry - my 162 and 185 manifolds are cast iron... I havent seen 182 or 202 manifolds...

anyone got any pics out of interest?

Nice heatshield Cookci! :P

I don't have a pic of the whole manifold, but you can see the first 6" in this one:

The 4-2-1 arrangement suggests that they didn't cut corners with it's design. I guess it would give ~4hp improvement over the cast manifold of the rev 1 engine (if it fits).

They didn't use tubular manifolds on the turbo cars to save costs (and because turbo engines are less sensitive to inlet and exhaust configuration).
