Engine Management Light Suddenly On!

My dad has a W reg 1.4 GS Corolla, done about 70k Yesterday the Engine Management light came on and has stayed on. He's not an enthusiast so it gets driven normally and serviced once a year..

What or how serious could this be?? The Cattalic converter or something?or oxygen sensor.. I saw a plug thingy under the steering wheel wonder what that is?

search the net for the engine management codes, bridge the terminals in the diagnostic connector and watch the engine management light flash on the dash when you turn the ignition to 'on' write down the number of flashes and consult the codes, it will tell you exactly whats wrong.

probably just needs some TLC...
