Side Indicators

What exactly are they, and what do they do? (i know they're on the side and where they are) but are they turn signal indicators or do they just light up with the headlights? I'm in the US and we don't seem to have those.

They are turn signal indicators,

they come on when turning left or right.

They're normally amber on the RAV4 but easily changed to clear just with amber bulbs... (one of my first mods)

(I was wondering why some pictures don't seem to have them, must be US models)
