What about Skoda Fabias and Octavias? Like VWs, but better built and equipped as well as being much cheaper.

Skoda's are made by VW, they aren't better built or equipped, they are the entry level range of cars.

Fabia vRS is one of the few cars that would tempt me out of my Yaris - I wish Toyota would do an equivalent

Skoda do considerably better than Volkswagen, Audi or Seat in both the JD Power and Top Gear customer satisfaction surveys so I would say they're better built.

The reason Skodas are cheaper than VWs is obvious when you compare the labour rates in Germany and the Czech Republic... Nothing to do with reduced quality. Have you been in one in the last few years?

Cant force him - it'll be his motor after all and not mine, but he's quite happy to go to Toyota on Saturday and have a look at them. He wouldnt have a Yaris though - too small!

id sell my yaris for an octavia RS,

otherwise id recommend a leon diesel,

or a corolla D4D well impressed with the corolla as a car i had the petrol 1.4 as a courtesy car was good stuff

My mum has a new mk5 Golf SE 1.9TDI 103bhp, nice car (considering its german)

The older golf won't be too bad though!

The Leon would be my choice though as its much better looking, or a Civic, have you looked at those? and why not a D4D yaris or MINI?

Yaris = too small

MINI = its a BMW and its too small

I have the small car, he has the more practical slightly larger car - a Yaris or a Mini wont suit really.

We have looked at Civics but they lack a diesel engine.

He really really likes the Audi A3 - his mate at work has one and its lovely. Might be off to the Audi garage first then! lol
