ive joined the forum at a bad time for me. my celica is off the road and im saving as much as possible to get it fixed. i bought it from a friend who told me he just serviced it. 4 weeks later my engine lost power and cut out, when i restarted it there was a knocking sound from the bottom end ( big end bearings??) the car was low on oil and there was no patches outside my house, the water is also clear. on the way home there was a crunching sound and i had to tow the car the rest of the way. its a 1990 import model gti i think but i dont know how to tell. anyone had similar experiences?

Hard to tell from a description, but from what you say it could well be the bottom end. Get a mobile mechanic or if you know someone who`s handy to have a look.

Provided the crank journals are ok it should be do-able. Theres a fore and aft crossmember that might be in the way but that just bolts on, two bolts at the front two at the back. If it`s the same as the GT4.

Yeah should be. Remove engine undershields (If fitted) Drain oil, Remove sump. Rotate the engine with a spanner on the crankshaft pulley nut, Get one of the journals down to its lowest point. Undo bearing cap.Push conrod and piston up into the bore about half an inch or so. Remove bearings. Clean and check the journals for any scoring. Give them a !Removed! good clean up anyway. Replace new bearings. Make sure you torque the bearing caps to the specified torque. And then move onto the next one. When your done make sure you use a new sump gasket.

Thats about it really.Probably over simplified it a tad but thats the basics. You ought to really check the crankshaft mains as well just to be on the safe side. It`s quite possible they could`ve picked up if the oil was really low.

Isn't the crank likely to need regrinding as well though?

These manual pages might be useful for you:

Page 2

I can also put up the section on checking mains/rod bearing oil clearances if you need them.

From the description i do rather think it`s a crank out job unless he`s really lucky. But i did the big ends on a Fiat ducato diesel thing the other week that had been knocking for about a 1000 miles apparently and believe it or not both the crank and big end journals, were perfect. There was a tiny amount of white metal transfer but they cleaned up fine. Found this out after i`d stripped the ruddy engine down as well.

So it`s possible that it could be ok.

Also another thought has occured. It would be wise to check the oil pump also.
