Hi,

i'am thinking of getting a HKS Super Power Flow filter for my corolla, its a e12, 1.6 3zz-fe. Would it make any difference to the car? or are there any better one out there for the corolla.

thanks

Hey

When fitting an air filter you have to remember to get cold air through the filter and nothing else.

Under your bonnet is going to be A LLOOTT of HEAT and its kinda trapped under there and what better an escape for the hot air then into your airfilter which is going to suck that air like you cant imagine.

As long as you cover around the filter and get cold air to it your fine.

I did mine without cold air and it was CRAP!!

now i got a Ractive air filter with on a hole at the top and heatshield around the sides with a cold air pipe on the hole and going as low to the ground as i could get it to (around 5" off the floor) and its gone WICKED, P4mance has improved noticeabley

Ive read that for every 10 Degrees the air is colder you get 1hp.

Honestly you will lose power guranteed with just the HKS SPF (although the sound of it will make you think its gone faster)

Ive tried a LOT and learned but cold air is a must and hot air is a DEFINITE NO!

did the heatshield come as part of the Ractive kit? i only ask, because im got a JR cone filter on mine, fitted to a Samco hose to bring it closer to the cold air feed, where the old airbox used to be. but it's still quite a long way away, so i presume a heatshield and some extra ducting would help

you can see it in my photo in the red arrow. Is the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

Definition: A device used in many fuel injected engines to measure the amount of air entering the engine so the computer can control the air/fuel mixture. Located ahead of the throttle body, the MAF sensor uses a heated wire or filament to measure airflow.

heres a pic of it a week ago, Cold Air System - My Site (you have to go to the top and scroll to "Racing Hart Alloys") but ive done an EVEN better job on it since.

but as you see the only air thats going in is from the right corner and i got a BIIIG ***** Funnel at the front which is FORCING air up the pipe and giving it more cold air then it needs

But Bro you think about it regardless of how far you put it, its still guna suck HARRD and maybe not most of the hot air but a LOT of it will go in.

Ideally you wana get it as much as the VIPER style as you can (although VIPER copied the blitz Sonic kit, the difference that ive noticed is PHATTT and 1 thing which im still loving is, is the fact that 1month ago my car went 85mph in 3rd, 1 week ago i tried it and i got 93mph @ 7,600 REVS and had to change but that cold air has played a MAJOR part in the recent jumpy jumpy feeling my car has

have you got any pic's on where the funnel sits, ie where you are drawing up the air from? and what kind of funnel are you using? im thinking of either drawing air from under the car or from the front bumper, which would be best?

im also worried that water mite be 'scooped up' whilst driving, have you had any problems with that??

Gti racing, where abouts are you from in Coventry as i'am from there aswell. Also do you know anywhere that sells induction kits for corollas(new shape) in coventry(apart from elliiotts).

To be honest it looks like a kit from the corolla t-sport would fit, you would need to check the diameter of the intake piping but the sensor looks identical

if your looking at japanese kit the thing to look for is something with chassis number zze123, or it might be zze122

i wouldnt worry to much about the fact that its a shortram, theres so much debate about it whilst its true that without doubt a cai is better, its not always a big deal depending on application, you could set up a cold air feed which would make it pretty much the same by buying some cheap piping from b&q and save yourself a packet.

I use a short ram on my t-sport, and have had the temp probe under the bonnet, the heat at the intake, at the back of my engine bay, after bringing the engien up to temp, was within a few degrees of outside, if your sitting in traffic it can creep up, and the car will slightly more sluggish but once moving the temp drops again.

Some cars are worse than others, but the deal on e12 corolla is that the exhaust manifold, (big source of heat in cars where the exhaust manifold is infront of the block) is behind the block, and air is pulled through the engine bay, the heat from the block and exhaust manifold should not have much effect on the intake charge temps, my filter and all the intake piping is all at ambient when i stop the car after a good run, and the intake manifold is sometimes colder, as it gets all the air coming into the front of the engine bay directly onto it. Ten minutes of sitting still and its a different story as the heat from the block migrates into the now uncooled intake manifold!

oh and going on the theory that every 10 degrees is 1 hp, the temps under my bonnet were allways within 5 degrees of ambeint, so i would gain oooh half a horsepower!, not trying to say that it makes no difference though as i said its application dependent and a cai will give consistent power, but you also could argue that the long piping of a cai can work against a high revving motor, which prefer shorter intake paths, and the debate rages on lol :D

i always wondered... people with a cone shaped filter (without airbox), why wont they put an air intake on the bonnet (a la renault 19 16v stylee) directly above the filter, wouldnt it help as the distance the air travelled there is no doubt shorter than, lets just say from the front bumper??

surely that would solve the problem??

Ive just dropped the pipe till it hit something and could go no further, but its definately doing the job, the hiss that i get above 6,000 RPM is MENTAL, ive done a LOT of testing on my car and have had some Disasterous outcomes, but ive learned and complete cold air is WAAAY better then anything ive done b4.

I always buy universal inductions and make it fit, and its never not fitted, ive made the holes and so to make it fit as it should, piece of *****.

And when you put a cold air pipe to it, what about the areas that its not covering? theyre guna suck in most of the heat, just try the full covering of it and youll see

and yeah i got my pipe from wickes for 5.99 and ive done lots of things with it, and the pipe is tough as ROCK!

Binderminder im from hillfields, you might have seen my car parked on stoney stanton road? if you need a hand with your motor just PM me and ill see if i can help (i charge 50.00 + VAT per hour)

Bigshark - Trying to do a front piping for cold air is MISSIONS on a corolla gti, not aure about other models, but cus the hole at the front is WAAAAAY too small, but i fyou can find the lowest spot in your engine bay away from the manifold and the downpipe and close as poss to the ground that should be ok,
