Police Capture Cars

Car thieves in West Yorkshire are about to start helping the police, by locking themselves up.

Covert capture cars are being deployed around the Force area. They feature the latest technical equipment enabling officers, who will be watching from a safe distance, to remotely immobilise the cars and lock the thief inside.

“We know where car thieves operate and we know the type of vehicle they target. We will be waiting for them. Get inside a capture car and you’ll soon hear the door lock. It probably won’t be the last door you hear lock behind you that day,” said Chief Superintendent John Holt, Head of Territorial Operations.

Last year (April 2004 – March 2005) vehicle theft was down by 20,000 offences in West Yorkshire. Car theft is down by more that 50% in the past two years.

Last week, at Bradford Crown Court, a major criminal gang were jailed for burgling homes and stealing high value cars worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

“This week, we are deploying capture cars, as we continue to put the squeeze on car thieves. The misery of car crime ought to be felt by the car thief and we are continuing to make that happen,” said Chief Supt

Holt.

Covert capture cars look like any other and could just as well be in a local beauty spot as a city centre street or car park.

This sounds like a good idea and if it works then great!

but could this not be classed as entrapment?

if only they put a starving rotweiler in there and unleashed him from the boot that would be great,

Nice to see them trying but when the courts just give them a fine and a few hours gardening you wonder if it's worth the effort :ffs:

Personally i'd like to see the car lock them in and drive off a cliff, much better all round

I dont think so.

If a copper was pointing the car out to people, saying "Oooh - look at that car. Its open, and hasnt got an alarm. And its got a new stereo in it" then there would be a good case for entrapment.

Leaving it there to catch theives is not - in my opinion.

Damn good idea I say.

Although, simply chopping off

- their hands to ensure they cant do it again.

- their genitalia to ensure they cannot reproduce

would be a better long term solution in my book.

Its a good idea, but entrapment sprang to my mind too....

I remember watching a programme on ITV where they pranked people by rigging a bike or a car for a laugh (I think the prog was called "Just for a Laugh" or something like that), one time they left some car doors open and keys in the ignition, and some potential thieves hopped in, started the engine, went to drive away and the doors locked and they started being sprayed with foam and all that and they couldnt get out

Anyway afterwards I turned to Rich and said "I hope those guys got locked up for trying to nick that car" but they couldnt, because it was entrapment, so they had to let them go, even though they were going to nick that car regardless.

So I dont see what the difference is - apart from one being the cops and the other being for TV!

see - that could be entrapment - leaving the keys in etc.

But - having it locked up and in now way advertising you should steal it, is not

Could you not argue that it was pre-emptive? Cos the cars are placed in locations that the Police know will get them broken into?...

It's a good theory , but for it to work properly the penalties need to be much much harsher. IF they catch Thieves then they should be shoved in Prison for a long term, but then with the way things are at the moment the Government need to build more Prisons - can't really win either way :ffs:

Nice idea, but its not worth wasting a car on people like that imo

Yeah, I think it was actually "Swag" that did that tbh, they definately did that kind of thing in Swag anyway. They did 1 where they left a lorry open with dvd players & tellys & things in, some fella jumped in, started robbing the stuff, they locked him in, moved the sides of the lorry away to reveal a cage like you'd expect to see circus animals in & then drove him around with a loudspeaker saying things like "roll up, roll up! Here is the common thief in his natural environment" & things like that. It was 1 of the funniest things I've ever seen

Yes they did one with a woman nicking videos from a lorry. She was right royally peed off. I think she considered it an infringement of her human rights.... to steal!

As for these 'police' cars... How about?... It captures the car thieves then drives them round to an area where a lot of people have had their cars stolen and/or damaged. A loudspeaker announcement tells the good folk of said area who now gather around the car....

Then the doors miraculously open. :boxing::thumbsup:

not classsed as entrapment as the doors are locked and no keys are left in igntion!
