Fistly a big hello to one and all. My partner is obsessed with supras and has finally deiceded she is going to take the plunge in a couple of months.

I was just wondering if non-turbos were officially sold in the UK? she is after looks rather than power as I think the TT would kill her.

So questions are...

Non-turbo sold in UK?

0-60 & top speed is?

plus did they sell aero tops over her?

thanking u muchly in advance!!!

nope - there was never a non-turbo version sold in the UK..

Be careful - there are a lot of imports that will advertise 'UK Spec' that arnt... key identifier is the bonnet vent - only UK cars had this (although they could be fitted aftermarket), UK cars were only Twin Turbos (and do have better turbos than the J spec), and only available as a hardtop (no aerotops im afraid).

0-60 is around 6 secs if i remember correctly, top speed around 160.

Dont worry about the TT killing her - like any powerful car, as long as you respect it, you'll be fine, plus most are auto's, which makes them a 'little' more docile.

Don't think the Auto owners will like their cars being called docile :) I have a non-turbo and I to bought it for looks but it does also perform well. The 0-60 time given below is about right not sure about the top speed though!? The handling is great and it can easily be used as an everyday car. The big problem with them is the cost of insurance which for me at 31 with 6yrs NCB is £750!!!!

read my post again - a 'little' more docile...

i.e. in comparison to the Getrag 6-speed box and snappy clutch...

and really i was just trying to lure him into a false sense of security, since buying a non-turbo is like a bear with no teeth...

True it is like a bear with no teeth, or at least no really sharp ones anyway, but then again a bear with no teeth wont bite your face off!!! If I'm honest I do want a turbo version but it will have to wait unless I'm prepared to live in it as well!!

again, im not saying its slow - its still a 3.0 litre...

but it does lack the 'surging' power of the TT...

A bear with no teeth can still do a lot of damage :)

UK cars key features if I remember are... glass headlights / bonnet vent as standard / light washer jets / better turbos / leather as standard. might be wrong though

Looks like my partner will be buying an import then if she really wants a non-turbo aero top.

Although as insurance is cheaper I might get her to buy the TT UK spec one. then I can get rid of my leggy twin turbo and have fun in her car too

:D

cheers for the tips peeps

Insure the supra as a classic car (any car over 10yrs old is classed as classic) with a classic car company to get the low premiums i do

I'm also seriously considering getting a N/A Supra, I've got a Gen 6 Celica GT at the moment.

My biggest worry is maintenance and running costs.

Are there bits that need regular replacement and if so what are they and what do they cost?

More importantly, what sort of MPG can you expect to get out of the NA? This is wwhat I suspect really rules out a TT for me. I do about 400 miles a week on average, 300 motorway and 100 around town, I need to work out if I can afford to run the thing when I get it.

Don't mean to hijak the thread, but I suspect this will be relevant to anyone thinking of buying...?

Thanks

Andrew

call me if your interested 07921 586808

BTW - You maintain them just as any other car, regular oil changes etc. And yes the non turbos are more economical than the turbos - about 30-35mpg at best

Hi,

30-35mpg, that's not as bad as I'd heard. I've been looking at the official figures and it seemed they do no better than the TT's, about 18-23mpg which I just couldn't live with. If I could get low 30's on a run I could probably afford that.

If I 'm buying it will be in late september / october time so I'll get in touch at the time to see if your still selling, looks like a lovely example :) I guess you'll probably be hoping you'll have sold it by then thought :)

I guess town driving is more like 18mpg? I really want to be sure I can afford to run it before I buy one. It would break my heart to get a Soop and then have to sell it, so I'd probably end up breaking the bank instead which I'd like to avoid!

Thanks for the advice,

Andrew

Is that a N/A or Turbo? Plus is it a manual or automatic????? Next what model letters are for the N/A and how come I cant get a quote on them? All the insurance companies only the 1980’s N/A but not the newer shaped ones. Thanks

I currenty have both a tt and an n/a and i can vouch for the n/a being more economical. The higher compression ratio and the lack of boost are the reasons for this. It just doesnt go through the petrol as fast.
