A Job For Me?

Just looking round at present.

I'm on a measely 13k a year at present, and am looking at other job options.

I'm currently an IT Network Administrator, and nearing the end of an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship. Although I do like working with computers, it was never a job I actually intended on doing - it just kinda popped up.

I mean beforehand, I was at 6th Form, and worked at Debenhams (stop laffing!), and as an apprentice at an upholstery and furniture restoration joint - which I liked, but money was crap.

Not sure what I could do now...

Qualifications wise, it pretty sucks.

I got as far as an A-level in Geography (B ) and Art (D ), and an AS-level in History (E ) - I actually did far better at GCSE level.

It sounds greedy, but I need more money!

Was doing the job hunting routine yesterday on the net, and one job available that popped up was a bailiff. Work fro home, work within 70mile radius of oxford, must have driving license (check!), etc...

Looked like it paid well too (think it was 15k for a trainee alone).

A mad idea at present.

Thoughts?

I'd give bailiff a go if I were out of work, might sound funny but are you up to it? Physically and mentally as you're gonna get some abuse...

If you are, go for it!!!

With that face and hair cut working as a bailiff you WILL definitely get abuse, either that or the punters will just laugh!

And reece - I don't have red hair everyday, funnily enough - that was red nose day.

Why don't you stick to what you're doing at the moment? It may be just a case of the grass being greener and all that.

Your current salary sounds a bit low for Network Admin. Any idea what sort of salary is on offer where you currently are once the apprenticeship ends?

When I left college I worked as a Croupier (casino dealer) for a few years. The pay isn't too good, but the fact you get to take lots of money off rich people makes up for it.

It's not what it used to be these days, but it's better than stacking shelves in Tesco's and seeing as british croupiers are considered the best in the world you can literally travel the world once you have 2 years+ experience. As an example I worked with someone who went to work on a cruise ship travelling between the Caribean and Alaska, plus whenever the ship is in port the casino closes so all dealers are allowed to leave the boat and go see the sights along with the tourists.

Do you ever watch that bailiffs programme?

Twas a good programme.

I like the getting out and about side of it, so long as you've got no problems making people cry and can take their abuse, it looks good to me...

You gonna finish your sentance daz?

:D

My apprenticeship is seperate from my job - I've organised it all, etc. The company were just gonna train me in house - thank God they didn't, cause the guy I work with just can't train people. He can't get it through his head (when it's not in the clouds), that some people don't know as much as him yet, and need training.

The company I work for is tight anyway. You can't go 2 or 3 months without someone leaving for better money.

I could stick with IT, but those sorts of jobs are very rare round here - 90% are for call centres, and the other support jobs tend to be for management.

Oh, and I'm crap at cards too... :D

Here's an extract from the recruitment site. I'd fall under trainee bailiff obviously:

"As a result of obtaining new contracts and significant growth over recent months, we are now seeking to recruit the following positions. Certificated Bailiffs and Trainee Bailiffs Do you have an enquiring mind, good interpersonal skills and a persistent nature? If you do and can work on your own initiative and are prepared to work unsocial hours as required, then you could be ideal for this position which involves collecting Council Tax, Non Domestics Rates and Magistrate Fines."

Abuse I can take - my sister and brother shelve enough of that at me.

Damn Firefox, occasionally craps out and won't update properly (complains about no data to submit even though I've put in my text) the result is it only puts in half of my text

I'm crap at cards as well so don't worry about it, as a dealer you aren't actually playing, you're just doling out cards and chips. As long as you're good at mental arithmetic (how's your 17 and 35 times tables? It's not that difficult, you get taught tricks to do these) you'll get on.

The salary for an AMA is never gonna be brilliant, its scandalous though - its all about learning while you work, yada yada yada, but personally I think its unfair to give people such measley salaries, even if you are training, because you're actually working twice as hard as your colleagues trying to work AND complete a qualification!

I'm in the NVQ and training business and the amount of people who leave FMA & AMA's early because of the salaries is shocking! I dont deal with them anymore though, I'm in Management NVQ's now - NVQ's are easier than MA's!

However, once your training finishes, depending on the company you work for - you may be rewarded with a much better salary.... in that respect I would say stick it out and if they dont give you a salary increase - tell them to stuff it - at least you'll have your qualification!

Do you play real cards or on the interweb? And do you go to competitions in the casinos?

I personally am crap at poker and so I will never play for cash, but if you like playing poker try "Paradise Poker" on the web, I used to play a bit on there, but I just don't have the time these days.

I'm in two minds - whether to stick it out or not.

Sick of being treated like crap by colleagues, and not getting recognition for helping out. Worked a stint last spring, helping at our stratford offices till gone 9pm most nights, and nothing! Not a day in leui, a bonus, or even a thank you....

However, they do stuff like hampers/ vouchers at christmas, staff BBQ', handing out ice creams on hot days...

It's a shame as there are some cool people here, but the people I work with (bar my manager really), are doo doo heads!

There's nowt to do as well. I prefer to keep myself busy, and work best at those sort of times, but there's bugger all to do. I can see myself being made redundant at this rate...

Both, play a private game once a week and i've dabbled on partypoker although I don't seem to do as well as I can't read peoples faces...
