Induction "kit"

i've spent most of today trying to cobble together my own induction kit. when i bought the car, it already had a JR cone filter, fitted to a length of samco hose, to distance it from the engine. like this...

(that black tube next to the fuse box is the cold air feed for the standard airbox). even with the hose, it's always seemed a bit close to the engine, so i decided to try and make my own induction kit. basically, after lots of messing about in breakers yards, i managed to find an AE92 GTi. i intended to use the ducting from the airbox to the throttle body from that, but it turned out that it had another outlet on it, so i couldn't (after wasting 2 hours trying 3 different breakers before finding one  ). so instead i went to wickes and managed to find various coupling sections of drainpipe with the correct diameter. it took a while, but after a bit of trimming, and cutting, i've managed to make a section of tubing, connecting to the samco hose (now shortened) running from the filter, which is now positioned right behind the headlight, in between the Battery and the fuse box.

after all the hassle, i'd prepared myself for the fact that i might have made it worse, and would have to put it back how it was...but i've just been driving it for 2 hours, because i cannot believe the difference it has made. it pulls stronger from about 4000rpm, and seems to breathe better at the top end, as the power around 7000rpm doesn't tail off in the way that it did - and it was 5mph quicker top end (i own my own airfield ;) ). i must admit, it doesn't look pretty (i'll try and take some pics tomorrow), but i'd urge anyone with a 4AGE to try this themselves. like i say, i wasn't expecting much, but for once i was pleasantly surprised - it cost me about £15 and made a genuine difference :D

Off topic a bit, but i'm getting it rolling roaded on monday, so i'll have a proper set of performance figures - i'll be dissappointed if it's below 120bhp. fingers crossed! :P
